I not sure how much it will help me but right now i just have a cheap one from walmart, prolly about 4" long maybe 5 but my bow is pretty loud and i believe a better one would help me "stabilize" better and get tighter groups.

What are some good ones out there?

How to i choose one to fit me?

also how important are string stops?

I bought a 9" Trophy Ridge Static Stabilizer... I LOVE MINE.. I didnt know much about mine when I first started looking but after a recommendation of a great friend I bought one and couldnt be happier...

If you're talking about String Silencers then I would highly suggest one... I have shot mine with and without and its pretty noticeably different in the amount of generated sound

Bow Stabilizers are pretty standard as in fit. It all depends on how your bow is balanced but usually it doesnt make to much of a difference, a few dampeners a nice accessory on a stabilizer though. The trophy ridge static is pretty nice. As in string stops some bows require them so the string isnt coming up and popping your arm on every shot but then others people use them to help with vibration/noise. But in my experiences if you have a loud bow a few damping devices probably isnt going to get rid of your problem , Some bows are just louder than others.

Don't know if it was the string stop from bowjax or their X-it stabilizer , but my bow is noticeably quieter with less vibration.
    About $24 after shipping.

Stabilizers are not a standard one size fits all kind of thing. Even in different hunting situations you may have to swap them out. Personally I have 3 that I go between for tree stand, ground blind, and 3D shooting.

Try out a few. Find one that you're comfortable with and practice. No amount of money that you put in a stabilizer will make you better if you don't shoot every day.
