Go to the Pope and Young or Boone and Crockett websites. Great instructions on how to score. You could also look up a P&Y or B&C scorer closest to you that might be kind enough to show you how. Every March there is a day of scoring at the Rathbun fish hatchery near Centerville. You could spend as much time as you like watching several different scorers measuring deer.

could've been said any better. P&Y and B&C systems is a great way to learn. Once you got the measuring system (where measurements come from) it won't take you long to "ballpark" figure them. It won't be hard to get tine lenghts -main beam and mass measurements will be your toughest guesses. It'll be easier to measure younger/smaller racks. Eventually you'll have a knack for it. Have fun!

Pope & Young has supplies you buy off of them too. It is the wires, tape's, and other stuff. I have all of it and will be taking a class for it this next year I hope!

I couldn't have said it any better myself. once you have used all of this advice, it won't take you long to start scoring deer on your own. thats how I learned, I still have my boone and crockett manual. once you have scored quite a few of them , it will help you out as hunter as far as knowing how to judge your bucks better in the stand, whether he is a shooter or not.

Perhaps the easiest method would be to ACTUALLY SHOOT ONE then you can play around with the guides on line to learn scoring.. :)

EDIT...AH RATS sorry I thought the thread was from Iowa Vet.. :(

See sometimes being a smart ass can back-fire on ya. Just kidding. No offense taken. You know I'll be honest what I was thinking. "Well GD, I have 8 heads hanging on my wall right now maybe one of those would work." LOL. It's all good. Have a good weekend.
