so, if I wanted to get into traditional stuff... where should I start?? longbow or recurve?? why one over the other??
Some shoot splint finger, index finger on top of the nock and other 2 fingers under the nock. Some shoot 3 under, just as it sounds, 3 under the nock. I guess you could use a release if one wanted but I wouldn't.
i started shooting compounds with split finger, probably how i'd shoot trad gear... what are some half decent trad bows worth lookin at (used and for a reasonable price)
Recurve: Older Bear Grizzly, excellent bow a true workhorse. Many critters have fallen to these bows. Under $200 all day long on tradgang.com, leatherwall.com etc... Longbow: I started with a Bear Montana, my first season with a longbow was last year, killed my first buck with it. Great bow, sends an arrow downrange with certain authority, no hand shock and quiet as a church mouse! New: $275-$325, Used: $150 - $250. This bow will put a smile on your face. Check out tradgang.com classifieds has tons of very good used bows. Great site, great people. You can spend some serious cash on a Bow with what ever kind of wood combinations, length and draw weight. You can also get some very nice bows for not a lot of cash, thats the beauty of it. I bought my first in Jan of 08', I have 5 bows in the house now and haven't touch my compound since I bought my first. Its too much fun!
see, that's the thing, i gotta get my first bow kill before I take trad gear to the field... i'll keep an eye open for those two... sounds like a cheap entry to get started...
What would be even cooler is getting your first kill with a Longbow or Recurve! I wish I would of made the switch years ago, better yet just hunted with a Longbow from the start! But thats just me.
it would be cool, but frankly, I've gotta take every advantage I've got for the moment... I've got certain accomplishments I need to hit first before I make the switch, though that doesn't mean I won't practice and etc in the mean time...
Best bet is to get around 45lb draw weight at your draw lenght don't go over bowing yourself otherwise bad habits will creep in real quick. Also I would not go under 64" for a LB and 60" for a recurve.
"Where should I start??" Find an experienced Archer that shoots Traditional Equipment. You'll gain more than from anything else you can do.. This will give you the opportunity to try some different bows, different arrows. Most people will be happy to let you try their bows. Stay away from "pro-shops". Very, very few can give good advise. Find a "Traditional shoot" to attend.. Lots of different bows to see/try and lots of good folks tp help you. Chris
Good advice Russ, took the words right out of my mouth!! Unfortunately Chris Is right, most are very uneducated with Traditional bows and the set ups Traditional hunters use. Good luck SevenMag!!
