Will , i'm a little confused with the Antler restrictions on the Colorado wildlife website . 4point minimum or browtine longer than 5" . Does that mean you can take a 3 pointer as long as the browtine is longer than 5" or it has to have 4points and 5" browtine ? . Just trying to do more research this time .
Ok, I'll see if I can anwer all the questions. Elk OTC tags can be purchased once you're here (vendors are located everywhere-Walmart for example). Deer and bear tags must be applied for. If successful, your tag can be sent to your home, or you can select to pick them up from a license vendor once you arrive in Colorado. Deer tags must be applied for before April 6th. Bear tags are limited and on a drawing basis. They go on sale sometime in July-they're sold on a first come first serve basis. There are plenty of bears in this unit. Bear tags are highly desired- make haste! You must have had a hunter safety training course and certificate to purchase tags (unless you were born before 01-01-49). I have found the elk in this area to be non-receptive to calling. I stay quiet for the most part. You call the shots though. It's your hunt. Steve, If you hunt with Dave, make sure you lead. Keep your radio on. Cooke, mate you should swing this one! Christine, you will draw a deer tag if you apply. Dave, yes a four point area (a bull must have four points on one side or a brow tine 5 inches in length. A brow tine is considered any point in the lower half of the antler. so yes, it can be a three by two as long as one point is longer than 5 inches and in the lower half of the antler. remember...one side). Can you skin griz piligrim? Bring it...LOL. It's all part of the love brother!
Thanks for clearing that and don't you worry bout me getting lost again , GPS in my pocket , map and compass as back-up . No hiccups this time , i plan on filling my tag not my pants again . Can you buy maps of the area from Bass Pro ?
I've found that you're better off forgetting the bugle and sticking to soft cow calls. A "Hoochie Mama" is a pretty foolproof call for this.
Amen to that Will....without the legs you have nothing. Don't wait until July or August to get in shape. For me it's a year round deal. If you don't have alot of time just walk hills and nothing else. flat ground is a waste of time... And in my case I'll be shooting my bow hard all summer to make sure I don't miss my bull on the last night of the hunt like I did two years ago!!
You'd have to worry about some wingnut with an either sex tag in their pocket and I think there'll be no lack of them around to ventilate your decoy.
Unfortunately over here in Australia most of the hunting I do is flat ground. We get up into the high country(only 3500') a bit but its only about 3-4 times a year so I have been on the treadmill at its highest incline and the stairmaster(revolving stairs) at the local gym 4-5 days a week for 1/2 hour at a time since Christmas. I will be keeping it up all the way through to leaving. Dont want to miss my chance because im too blown to draw the bow.
Excelpoint, the main thing is to get that heavy excersion going and I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to all of this. Just know what's worked better for me over the years and have learned that a person can never do enough to get ready. I've had the pleasure of hunting with Will and have learned some valuable lessons. Still working on my archery abilities and there are times when I wish someone else was shooting my bow for me!!! )
Camp is approx.... Lat. 39°27'52.55"N Long 106°20'42.29"W Wow! I had a lot of catchin up to read. Y'all have me thrilled about his hunt! I can't wait to get there! Depending on arrival times, Steve and I might be able to carry someone to camp. I think I'm gonna have to haul a utility trailer this year...
Sounds good. I do my workouts based around an aerobic workout so it works the heart rate up pretty good. I know the archery skills thing. Sometimes I cant hit the side of a barn and feel like turning my longbow into a boomerang LOL Thankfully its not that often or I would be forever replacing bows :D
12 pages and it's only January 15? I suspect this may be the longest thread in BH.com history by the time we actually do anything!
So who's packing what (bow wise)? Sounds like a few will be bringing their traditional bows, love It!!! Myself- Wind Walker Take Down Recurve (62lbs at 28")
Steve. At this stage I will be bringing 3 Bogans and atleast 1 Yarra Of course 1 of the Bogans wont be used for any hunts or test shoots as Matt will be taking it back to Australia as it is the major prize for his E-Mags writting comp.
Funny Steve, I was actually going to add that to the attendees list the other day so I'll start it here now and update it as folks chime in: iamyourhuckleberry: pocket knife and/or Kanga Custom Bogan Cougar Mag: BowTech Allegiance and Patriot GMMAT: Shaeffer recurve(s) Page: self made longbow virginiashadow bz_711: Hoyt Havoc txmarshmonkey kanga: 3 Bogans and at least 1 Yarra Txjourneyman: Diamond Marquis and Kanga Custom Yarra Bails-UK: Kanga Custom Bogan and Yarra UKBowhunter: KodiakArcher: Elite z28 (yes, I need training wheels!) and Kanga Custom Bogan 56#@29" Schultzy: Wind Walker Take Down Recurve (62lbs at 28") Chuck Miss Jessica: Bowtech Equalizer 55lb@27" Rex: Excaliber crossbow 225# at 16" Christine: BowTech Equalizer carpsniper Excelpoint: Jim Jones Firefly TD Longbow. 55#@26" ironranger Daryl OHBowhntr: Hoyt Trykon
