I will be bringing my hike gear with me. Happy to stay in my hike tent to make room in the bigger ones for others.
The idea is to keep the lads who are traveling from abroad warm and comfy. You are not going to have a lot of room to pack surplus camping gear. If you're driving, bring it!. If you're flying, bring just what you need in personal gear and a sleeping bag. We'll take care of the rest. Besides, you're going to need room for souvies when you go home.
Driving here...so should have room for another Tent, couple 5-gallon water jugs, 4 bag/style chairs, a 10'x10' canopy, tarps and rope (and my own cot). Will also have an A/C adapter for my car - in case anyone needs to charge cell phones, etc. Appreciate all your efforts Will!
Hello Guys & Gals, So with "Elk Camp " coming soon and 2010 being my first Elk hunt, I need to get a game plan together. Which Elk call (s) do you guys use? or which would you reccommend? Im thinking take it slow this season and try out with the Primos Hoochie mama and hold back the bugle calling and focus on getting close with the cow calls? I cant help thinking if I dont learn to bugle I will have one hell of a hard time locating Bulls early in each days hunt , is this so ? Just need some help guys............
Cheers Will....... Lets just keep it simple then! Listen, Listen,Listen some more and then close in on those Bulls! Looking forward to it guys! Colin
Bringing it TTT for those looking to order maps.... Guys, not sure who has or doesn't have maps, but I thought I'd post up links to the BLM maps..... If you call the office, in CO, the maps are cheaper than ordering them online, just and FYI. LEADVILLE is the section map we'd want for this area. See top bullet where the $4.00 price is listed, and use that phone number to order... http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/BLM_Resources/public_room/map_info.html Here's the Map Directory.... http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/co/resources/map_information.Par.82441.Image.-1.-1.1.jpg And I believe if I remember correctly, the marker on this map is about where Camp will be.... http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=39.46526....46526,-106.34697,4.3 km N of Mount Powell CO TTT, as I was asked about the links for maps....
I sent them an email to see if they will post a map over to Australia. I would like to have a good study of the area before getting there.
How far, in miles, do people tend to travel from 'base camp'? Im quite happy to 'sacrifice' a 1:100,000 map for use as a 'map board' so everyone can put their locations on and where they spotted any animals. But I think I will be wanting to use the 1:24,000 maps when on foot as they have more/better detail, along with the arial photos and digital terrain maps. I have heard that some people get lost out here!?
Lol.....lost. It's "big" country and one must surely keep his wits about him or be swallowed up. In all cases, we will be moving uphill from base camp. A downhill direction will put you back onto a roadway of some sort. Logistically I planned this location for that reason (among others-like proximity to services/hospital).
EP, I used Acme mapper (have to use Internet Explorer to print), and custum built my maps. I got better detail than the USGS 1:24k would get me, then what I did was "seam" them over, so I had maps on 2 sides of a 8x11page, and had them laminated. I made up 3 pages (one map each side) that were at 1:12000 (1"=1000ft), and they would have been great had I been able to get access to the area I made them for. The "FS road" on the maps (every map I looked at) was a private GATED road w/ electronic pass access. I'm still a little BITTER about that one, but it was beautiful country, and I did see some wildlife, just not what I REALLY wanted....
Excel; Those photos are Doug's OH B of the" Castles" off Ohio Pass Rd near Gunnision, Colo. This is not the Pando area, where the 2010 elk hunt is planned. But all of Colo is ruggedly beautiful, some more than others. For you out of country folks and all, go to http://www.mycolorado.org/ and http://www.aroundcolordo.com and http://www.rockymountainscenery.com/ to see photos of the Colorado areas. The Holy Cross Wilderness area is the area you will focus on to see the surrounding area around Pando, Colo. I bet old Huck has some photos he can post of the hunting area around Pando, Colo. I hope I have those web addreses correct, from memory. Enjoy. HH in Pa
oops : sorry I misspelled one, http://www.aroundcolorado.com/ see the Tuhare lake trip report on that web address. That will be two ridges over from no name creek and your campsite. It is in the Holy Cross Wilderness area. HH in Pa
Sorry Bro, a bit of a tease, it is VERY beautiful indeed. The Castles drew me like a drug, unfortunately I never got a whole lot closer than that pic you saw. But the whole Western Half of Colorado is absolutely beautiful!!! Nothing short of breath-taking if you've never been there. Here's a little more of a "tease..." Again, these are not the same area we'll be hunting in, but the beauty is probably very similar. The time frame we will be there, the Aspens may be much more yellowed than the GREEN color in most of my pictures as well. HH is pretty familiar with CO and knows the area I was in fairly well.
Not that I'm counting you understand 107 days, or: •9,244,800 seconds •154,080 minutes •2568 hours •15 weeks (rounded down)
