Rob, I didn't realise how many of us were going Traditional. Thats cool and will better the odds of somebody getting a Trad kill.
Joe. You and Dom should come along we need to tip the scales in favor of us trad guys:D It's going to be a blast I really don't care if I get a shot off or not just being in camp with great friends (even tho I have not met them yet) will be enough for me
If I am able to make this trip I will have to scale down my hunting wardrobe to meet my financial constraints. Scent Lok Sment Lok
Just use your current hunting kit with moisture wicking base layers and layer up. Get some scent killer instead of scent lok and you'll be fine That is my intentions. No need to buy (much) extra camo! If you want more camo the ASAT website is selling 'paintball' grade stuff which doesn't pass their UV tests, wash it in UV killer and de-scent before the trip.... PS: she looks familliar (oups its a man.....)
WooHoo lots of trad guys. Thats what I like to see. Its interesting how popular scent lock stuff etc is in different countries. Over here in Oz its the total opposite.
shadow, I got within 8yds of elk lastime and that was with no scent like , I had them clothes on for 5days when we saw them ( although i must say my underwear was fresh ) . All I used every day was scent killer on my gear , make it happen . I'd rather spend my money on other stuff , than expensive scent locking gear . A bit of spray will do fine .
Im the same, I dont have enough camo gear toi change everyday so I just keep em as fresh as possible, a quick dip in the river helps to. Then I just make sure I keep on the right side of the wind. Bails. What is the scent killer you use?
I don't care how much of that scent killer/blocker/containment stuff you waste your money on. You've still got to be on the right side of the wind or you're done. That stuff may help with whitetails but it's worthless for any critters that really have a sense of smell. Learn how to keep track of the wind and where to be when.
It seems to be vey popular for tree stand hunting which is very rare over here in Australia. 99% of our hunting is on the ground spot and stalk.
Roll on September. New bow arrived on Tuesday so i goto get fletching some arrows for it. Cant wait to just get to camp. Never been in that big a camp before. Usually only 2 of us. We are doing a 4-5 night backpack hunt at the end of April which will be with 5 other Trad guys. Should be a bit of fun.
Rob, I'll tell you my thoughts on it, and they're probably worth "LESS" than two pennies but hear they are..... A lot of that stuff is PURE CRAP, but I DO believe a good base layer is AWESOME, and having gone several days without a good shower sweating like heck in CO, I could literally take and sniff the X-Scent base-layers I'd worn, and they HONESTLY didn't stink. The Silver ION stuff is NO JOKE, that being said, I think the REAL threat is when you come trotting in there smelling like you're on a date in 1984 wearing half bottle of BRUT because the girl said she LIKED it, and you didn't realize she liked it because her DAD wore it.....:D I think if you keep you're "perfumy" smells to a minimum, I usually don't even use a "special" scent killing soap, just a mild soap that is "non-fragrance," and wash ALL of my clothes in scent-free detergent/softener/dryer sheets, it's all good. Hell sometimes with our FREAKED out whitetails around these parts, you can have a perfect wind, be 30' up, an the whole nine yards, and one little flinch, and you're busted!!! Nothing is going to completely kill any of our odors, but if we can cover them, disguise them, re-direct them (wind), then we up our chances. I was 30yds from a HUGE bear this past fall, and he had NO clue I was there, As I had the wind in my face, yet I can assure you I knew HE was there....smelly old fart!!! For what it's worth, just to keep me from stinking to myself, I think the X-Scent socks and Base-Layers are well worth the money.....on Ebay, I got the base layers for $15 a set last year, and the socks for $5/pair!!!
But it's a good discussion to have none the less. I agree on the silver ion base layers stuff but only because it allows me to wear the same shirt for several days which cuts down on how much I pack. One day of mountain hunting and polypro reeks so bad I can't stand it myself. The activated charcoal stuff is worthless though since you haven't got a dryer out there to reactivate it with. Don't get me wrong, I wash my clothes in scent free soap, don't bring my hunting clothes in the house, use the silver ion base layers... but the big thing is to really learn how to stay downwind. It'll drive you nuts in the mountains because it'll never blow consistently from one direction all day like some of you flat landers are used to. It rises half the day, falls the other half, swirls around corners, accelerates through canyons, swirls in the timber and just when you think you're golden because you've busted your ass to go the extra mile to keep it in your favor, it comes around and smacks you in the back of the neck! Do yourselves a favor; leave all the activated carbon hyped up stuff at home and get yourself a little, cheap bottle of talc and puff the wind often to see what it's doing.
I've got several all over the place because I'm always losing the damn things. Good thing they're so inexpensive! I'd hate to go through Carter releases like that!
Didn't read everything on scent. But I plan on "smokin' up" AND playing the wind. Looking forward to it, guys. The time's drawing shorter, daily. My new bow will be here in less than 6 weeks, now. I'll be bringing both of my 'curves.
:D I know what you mean. Well not the release thing but I certainly have a few windicator bottle in different spots.
Nice GM. What did you get. My new Jim Jones Firefly arrived on Tuesday. Cant wait to get it out on some game.
