Ordering my pack, this week. I'm gonna incorporate a loaded pack into some of my conditioning. I figure if I can do a good run (with pack) through the hilly terrain, here.....that's about all I can do. 6'1"/195 (now). I wanna go to CO at no more than 185#'s. I haven't been that low in probably 20yrs. I have NO IDEA what my arrow's FOC is. I'm probably not going to get too much into my setup, for fear I'll get preached to. I know (I've seen life-sized 3D animals) how big an elk is. If I wasn't confident I could put one down, I wouldn't be planning to shoot (at) one. Looking forward to the trip more and more as the days progress.
OHBowhtr, I-70 works good for me. I am only 35 miles from it near Terre Haute or Marshall, IL. Be a good place to park my truck.
For broadheads.......I'll be packing Slicktrick 125 grain Magnums most likely. Speaking of altitude, I'll be making a trip to the doctor just before departure. Last trip I persuaded him to give me a prescription of......."forget what its called"..........lol. Anyway, it did help me when I started hiking higher. In fact I probably hiked more than I should have the first day out.
Diamox.....supposed to be pretty good stuff. I just load up on B vitamins, Aleve/Tylenol/Ibuprofen (couple times a day)or one of those type drugs, and Pepcid (couple times a day also)as that altitude stirs my acid in my gut something fierce.
Pretty Sure I'm In I'll be coming from Southern Indiana - would love to ride share. I live near Bedford, Indiana. Drove out to Will's house last year enroute to a Wyoming pronghorn hunt - the northern route seemed to be the best route to me.
Yep, the rancher thought I missed that buffalo with my 580 grain arrow out of the Z28 at 70 lbs. He saw it bounce through the sage on the far side of her and said; "Well, at least you missed her clean." I gave him a quizzical look and said "Missed? No, it went clean through her." He couldn't believe it. If it'll go clean through a buffalo at 50 yards, I don't think an elk stands much of a chance... Then again, if you hit the shoulder it's game over, I don't care how big your arrow is.
For conditioning, see how well you can shoot when you're winded... You'll probably reduce your effective range a tad.
I shot my bison with 500g arrows tipped with solid two-blade heads (don't remember the brand) at 250fps - three arrows - all three complete pass through. Didn't need the two-blade heads. Probably could have done as well with G5's, my normal head.
Well i`m asthmatic , 168≠ , 5`9 , but i walk a fair bit , my job has me climbing steps and ladders all the time and i didn`t struggle last time ........ much ! I`m in scotland on the 19th - 21st , climbing , walking and getting pictures of the Red Deer . Will post some pictures when i get back
Greg, If you're that close, I'd come to your place and get you, I'd hate for your truck to be parked too far from home and get damaged. If this all comes together, that would be almost perfect. After my last 26hour drive out, and 30+ drive home, it'd be nice to have someone else along, that was a LONG ride, believe me!!!! Matt, On arrow weight there is a point where you can achieve optimal energy output from every bow out there, then it becomes a compromise between how much speed do you want, and how much "MOMENTUM" do you NEED!!! I shoot a 445-450gr arrow out of most of my set-ups, and it hits HARD, plus it's got decent speed behind it!!!
We were in Scotland snowboarding over christmas, they were experiencing temps of -20 even at lower elevations and had over 1.5m snow! This brought the Red Deer (Cervus elephus) down from the deer forest to lower elevations, we must have seen 3-400 deer in a twenty mile stretch of highway! Look forward to the pictures and don't forget to practise you stalking skills on them
Adam, Look me up when you are ready to hunt Colorado. My door is always open for hunters. Matt, really try to get in touch with Cavan...he said he was coming. With your prodding, he'll be pushed over the top. I want to push an idea past everyone. I know money should never be an issue among friends, and I remember reading an article Jeff posted about Paul Shafer. In this article, Mr Shafer's friends all pooled their funds to help Paul go on a desert bighorn hunt. It was a hunt which Paul could not have otherwise enjoyed, he was 100% successful. That sharing concept has always been a part of my life. So, with that being said, I would like to propose we all help someone who could not by himself or herself afford this hunt... I propose we all donate whatever we want-you know, those hunting realated items we have laying around which are not or rarely used. We can have our very own auction of sorts with all the proceeds going towards getting someone west. It would be fun, IMO! I have a mess of things I would throw in the pot. It would do our souls well! Thoughts?
Just a thought, Will.....but if we had a "Hunt CO in 2010" thread going in the calssifieds.....people could post items....and have the funds go to a central location (you?). I've got a few items I could post in there, also.
Not sure what i can do too help over here , so i,ll paypal you a donation if thats ok and sell something on ebay to cover it
Good idea Will, I'll see what I can find to throw into the 'pot' As with Dave, I will paypal you the money across
