Yep, going the same route (220 grain Outback Supremes). My arrow will be a FMJ tipped with a 100 grain brass Insert. Total arrow weight of 701 grains.
If we match this up right, I'd love to have a passenger to split some driving time, as I drove it solo out and back last year, and I'm PRETTY sure my 2500 Dodge w/ a Cummins WILL get us where we NEED to go....at least it did me the last 2 times I was out there.....and should get nearly 20mpg to boot.
Aw Steve, you're gonna hate yourself for the first 48hours while you get acclimated, then it's AWESOME....I'm psyched to be in those beautiful mountains again.....I was a bit west, and a bit north of this specific area, but it's all BEAUTIFUL!!! Were I single, I'd probably be running a clinic up in NW Wyoming and enjoying the life forever, but being married, having kids, etc. Keeps me in the lowlands at least for another 15 or so years....:D You guys are "HARDCORE" though, I'm gonna be lugging a bow w/ training wheels cause my shoulder just don't like my 55# recurve well enough to let me shoot it often.
Trust me Doug, I know. I've been on a half dozen elk hunts, 2 of which were about 10,000 feet. The first few days like you said are tough but just like that your like WTF, my legs don't have needles In them as bad and I can breath all of a sudden. I'm better!! :D
Last time out, I biked seriously to get ready, as running ain't an option anymore, and my legs NEVER bothered me a bit until I slipped and slid a little ways down a canyon wall, and strained my quad and rolled up my ankle. But I already have a little "exertional asthma," and that thin air takes it out of me for a couple days, that's FOR SURE!!!
That asthma has to be tough on a person In that thin air. My hats off to ya for doing It!! The last few elk hunts I've went on I didn't prepare myself like I did when I 1st started elk hunting and to be honest I did "ok". I don't have time anymore to do these work outs at home like I used too. But then again what I do on a daily basis now with all the wood cutting I do Is Itself a damn good work out. Either way I gaurantee you I'll be sucking air from day one till the last day and If I'm not that means I'm not hunting hard enough. I better be 10 pounds lighter when I leave Colorado too. If I'm not, again I didn't hunt hard enough.
Doug, What route you take through IL and MO? I might be an option to split ride...I have no problem driving the last 14 hours from here...
Straight across I-70...... Steve, I'm a "MULE" by many people standard, I can carry some weight, I'm heavier than MOST guys (about 240-245#) but at the same time, I can mountain bike, hike, and do about anything I want. Including drag that PHAT doe out of the woods tonight, rather than get on my old Big Red and pull it out the easy way. Granted, pulling her about 300yds all uphill had me sucking a little air, but I think dragging something is lots of times more difficult than just picking it up and carrying it a for the most part. I think I lost about 10# this time out, lost 15# the last time, but I "ate better" this time around as well, and probably stayed better hydrated in all honesty.
Don't get any crazy ideas, you're a big old boy yourself......:D But I'd certainly be happy to help a guy pack out an animal, just a little happier if it was MY animal I was packing out......:D
I will be going with Outback Supreme's with a 100gr insert on CE250's for an all up weight of about 600gr out of my Firefly Longbow.
Awesome Will,I wish the rockies weren't so far away... Preparing for a hunt like that and applying for tags is on my agenda in the future.Great footage, gotta love Colorado. I've only been out there a few times on road/ski trips with some buddies, but I couldn't help staring at the far mountains and thinking about the giant critters running around. I love the meat, but only get some when my cousin and uncle get Wyoming tags and put one down. Its been a few years haha.
Hell, I thought you were a little BIGGER guy like me...... No offense intended, I was just thinking you looked a lil bigger in the couple pics I remember seeing....Now, I'm just the FAT guy.....:D I'm 6' and 240# this week, been working on finding 225, but we'll see. Was almost 250 (248) at the beginning of the year, but that was all that good food.....Wife dieting, and cutting back on my cold ones, spending a little time in the Gym, I'm on the way. Once it's warm 225 will be pretty easily attainable, but I ain't likely gonna get much below that.
Outback Supreme's Single Bevel here as well not sure if I will be useing the 125's with the 100 gr brass insert with line trimmer cord for added weight and a FOC of 24% or the 220's, 100gr brass insert without the trimmer cord for a FOC of 38%:D
That's just impressive... ...the more I learn about arrow weight & FOC and how that impacts penetration WAY more than speed (and realizing 95% of my shots are under 25 yards)...the more I want to get into a heavier arrow...
I know this much Matt that If I was still shooting a compound my arrow weight would be way up there as well. Just Imagine the speed of today's compounds combined with a 600 grain arrow, unstoppable If you ask me. If people can do this with traditional bows (heavy arrows and high FOC), just Imagine what they can do with the compounds of today. Like I said unstoppable. My FOC still Isn't where I want It yet but It's not bad either, I'm at 18%. I want It In that 20% range but I'm not complaining. :D
