Kanga, I'm all for saving $$$ we'll have to figure those details out when it gets closer. Ya'll might get cold in the back of the truck.
Will, that video looks like Whitetail hunting in IL Brett: 1-have never flown with gear so not much help (and I'll be driving) 2-I was told Maid Service was included in all Non-resident tags??? 3-Zero experience with Elk...but I will offer to help you Pack it out!
TMM...fantastic pics...thanks for sharing! The anticipation and preparation will surely make 2010 a great year!
Brett: I plan on putting both my bows in my suitcase!:D TMM....thanks for the photos. Absolutely beautiful!....and congrats, again, on your bull!
Jeff, I believe I will do the same....do I just check the baggage in with my bow/arrows/knives etc? Any airport around here is on super alert all the time so it is kind of unnerving to bring those types of things into the airport, but if it is legal and all......... And thanks for the offers to help pack out my elk kill. I will KILL. I am the guy that never wins anything with lottery tickets and such....this time I will KILL!
Brett.... Not sure your bow will fit (suitcase)! Will traveled here with a hard shell case and little more. I'm sure someone you know has one. OR, you could always mail it out there and have it waiting for you. Then reverse it for your return.
Wow , i wanna be where them Elk were crossing Ok let me get one thing straight , my cooking skills go no further than beans on toast or PBJ sandwiches . BUT , i'm always willing to learn have no problem in having a shot at cooking ..... just bring plenty of toilet roll and dig a big hole lol ..... i'll do my share i guarantee that . What i will say is that you will find no better host on a hunting trip than the man himself ... Will . 2008 was a fantastic experience , one that has not and will not ever be forgotten . Check out these for views of your future hunting ground , come Fall 2010 ..... great times : Russ old beam , you'll have to be quick to ambush me
That settles which bow I'm bringing... the Z28. That'll at least put me on even ground with Russ and his longbow. My longbow is just too pretty to pack down there.
I'll be finishing up my CO elk hunt about the time you boys will be arriving... I'll be sure to keep you updated on how things are going. I think we're heading back to the Montrose area once again, though we haven't nailed it down yet.
I certainly wish all of you the best of luck! I'll be trying to draw a NM tag this year. If not, then I'll be in an OTC area in CO as well. VAShadow, I've flown with my bow a dozen times. Just buy a good hard case for it, and make sure it can't shift once the case is closed. Wrap your string with something to protect it just in case something comes lose inside the case and starts flying around in there. Trust me, those airline folks are all but careful with the cases. The TSA actually broke my sight one time, but at least they had the courtesy to do it on my return flight
Thanks huntingson--I will do as you all say. I started with a goal last year of going on my first Elk hunt. Even though it will be tough working it out, I am going to go! I hope to meet a bunch of great people and share in the beauty of the spot we hunt.
VA, get yourself a good SKB. It'll be worth the investment to protect your investment (both your bow and your hunt). I just picked up a new 4114A because my Elite Z28 won't fit properly in my old 6002 case, even though I was able to make it work for the bison hunt with Will. (If you've got a newer parallel or past parallel limb bow make sure you get a case it'll fit in.)
OK guys...give me your opinion on boots for a Rocky Mountain Elk hunt? Insulated/Uninsulated? I know this is a vital piece of gear - any brands/models you would recommend?
I second the SKB cases. As for boots, the amount of insulation kind of depends on the temps you expect and how quick your feet get cold. But generally for me, non-insulated to light(400 gram) have been fine. The most important thing is that they fit properly, are comfortable and well broken in.
