........but this is the first time I've seen it up close. On my way in to work this morning I just happened to look up at this old church fence about 20 yards back off the road tight to the woods. Turned the car around and walked up and sure enough the poor guy was still alive but obviously mortally wounded. 2 friends were also with me and we attempted to get him down but there was just too much dead weight hanging to get him up and off that spike. After a couple attempts at freeing him and getting blood covered in the process we finally stepped back and realized that freeing him wasn't going to do him a bit of good. He would now be stuck INSIDE the enclosure with no way to jump out and his back leg was hamburger. He was bleeding profusely and it was obvious that his time was limited. I called the local police and they sent out a couple officers to finish him off. We stayed the extra few minutes until they got there and put him down. As much effort as we put into hunting these things it's such an overwhelming feeling of needing to do something now to try to save that same animal. Something that is probably impossible to explain to a non or anti hunter. Unfortunately we were a little to late to save this guy but at least we were able to speed up the inevitable. If it looked like a non-mortal wound trust me we would have found a way to get him off that fence. Bummer.
Holy cow, Matt. I've seen pictures of it on the web, but never in person. I know just exactly the feeling you're describing. It's a hard thing to see, but like you said, at least you sped up the inevitable, and he didn't have to suffer longer than he probably would have.
When I was in highschool I worked at this Mcdonalds. One night as we were closing up and doing our walk in the parking lot a 120ish 8 pointer came sprinting through our lot and across the freeway. Upon jumping on the highway he managed to somehow brake both his back legs. He was then stuck in the ditch on the opposite side of us. We walked over to him and he was a healthy deer in velvet. I know how you feel cuz we couldn't do anything for him but call the sheriff who came and shot him.

just another example of the fact that hunters love these animals more than to anti_hunting crowd ever could. Nice work ending the poor guys suffering. He might've been on that fence for days had it not been for your compassion. Good work brother

you think that is bad you should see my Khakis from trying to help him get the deer loose.....Seriously though it does suck and yes My pants did get blood all over them.
My uncle has seen this twice this summer alone on the same fence on his way into work. I cant imagine being impaled on a fence, poor guy.
It sucks, but you did a good thing, Matt. I can't help wondering though after the last thread with a deer stuck on a fence: If you hadn't been there yourself and taken the picture yourself, how long would it have taken for someone to say it was photoshopped?
I had to help free what I thought was live deer from a wooden fence about a month ago. The deer was literally hanging face down with half it's body stuck between the planks. It was dead from what I am guessing was asphyxiation.
Really sad. I can shoot thousands without even blinking, but seeing them stuck or ran over bums me out.
