I sat a clear cut that was about 3 years old on Saturday evening and I saw 7 deer. 5 does ( one fawn that was completely white accept her face)one young decent 8 pt and another buck at about 250 yds, couldn't really tell how big he was, but I could see antlers. They all came out in different spots but they all ate a ton of browse. This cut was sprayed so the broom straw is brown but there buds of some sort that they are eating.. I really love hunting a clear cut, deer just seem to be drawn to them. Now the hard part is trying to narrow down stand placement. What is/are your clear cut stories? Any info to help a brother out on hunting them?
We've heavily select cut various parts of the property I hunt on and in about 5 years, you'll end up with the best bedding and browse areas on the property. I have had to relocate many stands to these areas in recent years. We try to stay out of them in terms of stands, because the deer love to bed in them and we don't want to pressure them out of their safe havens, but the edges leading out to food sources have been dynamite.
out of the 7K acres I hunt, 95% is pines, cutovers and clear cuts....all timber company leases.. it changes every year
250yards perfect for a rifle. Not so much for a bow. Sounds like a good size clear cut, in which case you are pretty much limited to finding trees on the edges that are close to where the deer are entering and exiting the clearing. What I love about clear cuts is if you have the ability to manage it as it grows. Keep certain areas brushed down or even planted as everything grows up around it.
