Wolves are becoming a nuisance by my stand. Saturday I sat and heard a few wolves howling just before dark just north of me. Tonight I sat and had a doe come behind me bout 5 oclock. She stood looking towards my stand and eventually winded me. Or so I thought. I couldn't believe that she smelled me when the wind wasn't that strong and she wasn't exactly downwind of me. 20 minutes later I heard a wolf howl north of me. A minute or two later I heard a loud howl within 200 yrds of me to the west. Not cool! I wished that wolf walked by so I could put an arrow up it's ass. What should I do?

I feel your pain. I have been having big coyote issues where I hunt. I have been hearing them every few nights. One night, I heard them at 11 going to bed and they woke me up at 2 and then again at 3. They were running all over my hunting spots. Next morning in the stand one lets loose about 100 yards away right before light and he eventually came past me. Tried to shoot but only had a 45 yards running shot, woulda been a lost arrow for sure. Fortunately, we can legally shoot as many coyotes as possible. However you dont see many during the day so I dont kno what to do about my problem either. Can you legally shoot wolves where you are?

Aside from following the law, what else can you do?

    (hint) Don't tell us.

I wouldn't suggest "taking care of it"
Like GregH said, if you do don't put it on here. Might work against you!

From what I hear the wolves are out of control. To me there no different then a yote. There should be no restrictions. I beleive I saw the elk population as Yellow Stone alone is a 1/3 of what it use to be when the wolves started making a come back.

Anyone see that special on the huge Wolf problems parts of the US are facing on McMillan River Adventures TV show? Federal Law prohibits killing them (atleast in these areas) and they wont give states the rights to tackle the issue on their own. They have almost killed off entire elk populations in some areas.

Sarah Palin does it, why not everyone else??:biggun:

Yeah move stands and given the opportunity "do what it takes" to get ride fo the issue. I started hunting areas where I knew the coyotes were pushing the deer. The deer the wolves are pushing might all be going to one particular place. Use the wolves to your advantage if possible.

the area i'm hunting is really hard to use to ur advantage. it's one road in and out. not a whole lot of options when it comes to walking in the stand. this is some thick northwoods. i fear that the wolves are driving the deer further out of reach. which really sucks. i have other woods i can hunt further down the road but i have no idea how far the wolves perimeter reaches.

SSS is a way to manage certain things, none of which should be discussed online.

From what I understand, this is standard practice for ranchers in Wyoming when the wolves threaten their livestock.

Marauder, Your spot is fine. Wolves have a pretty large territory. If they have a kill, they'll stick around for a few days, but then they'll go back on the prowl, most likely somewhere else.

Also, wolves will not "drive deer out of an area". Hunters are lazy and consistent pressure from them near easy to access areas can seemingly push deer deeper into the woods where they aren't constantly bothered, but wolves don't have to commute like we do. If the deer move, so do the wolves.

I've seen wolves and deer on the same sit. My brother shot his 1st wall hanger 15 min after a wolf was under his stand.

I've also heard just as many wolves howling in the early AM as Evening. Couple that with the looming rut, and I'd say any time in you stand is good right now. If you can be there, be there.

    Now a few side notes.

I love how the same people how would form a lynch mob if someone was advocating poaching a deer or trespassing, bring up SSS.

Yes the elk herd in Yellowstone is down 1/3, however the Elk population was grossly overpopulated to the point that ecosystems in the park were nearing complete destruction.

Wolves will help WI with it's CWD & coyote problem :poke:
