I shoot a Hoyt Powerhawk at 58-60 lbs. IBO speed on the bow is 305. Carbon Express Maximas 350's at 31 inches. 125 grain tips. 4" feathers. 28.5" DL. Total weight of the arrow is in the 425 grain range. Last time I chronoed it was shooting in the 233 fps range. KE calculates to around 53 ft-lbs. I would really like to try this new Bloodrunner in 125 grain that they just posted about NAP releasing. I think I should have enough KE and momentum to push that 2-1/16" diameter head through a deer but would like others opinions.
I'm on the fence about most expanding broad heads when shooting under 60 KE, esp BHs that are as wide cutting as the ones you mentioned. I shot and killed two deer last year with BR 2 blade BHs and 1 with a Slick Trick Magnum. Bottom line, I'm lucky with all the extra KE I get from my DL (31") and I don't have to make such choices. If I was in your spot though, I'd be shooting a sharp fixed blade head without a doubt.
See that is the thing Ben. And that is why I've always shot cut on contact fixed blade BH's. I'm currenlty using the Magnus Stinger 4 blade. What???? I'm not following you there dude. Why would the KE EVER change between heads if they are the same weight?
It doesn't take much to deploy the BR2. Second, its going to cut anyways because its a hybrid. Shoot the BR2.
This is the formula for KE; velocity x velocity x total arrow weight (in grains) divided by 450,240 You provided the numbers for velocity at 233 and arrow weight at 425. 233x233 = 54289 54289x425 = 23072825 divided by 450240 = 51.245 The KE for your stated speed and weight is 51. It does not change with a different tip of the same weight or if it does change, it is not ameasurable amount.
I could throw it into a deer and it'll deploy, but my point is that without an above average amount of KE you aren't (IMO) gonna push a 2 1/4 inch head (deployed) through a deer consistently. I'll take 2 - 1 1/4" 3 or 4 blade holes over 1 - 2 1/4" 2 blade hole every time.
I agree with Both of Ben's posts. IMO, a cutting width like that performs much better with a KE number around 70. This year I'll be shooting a setup pretty much the same as yours, Brad and the bloodrunner 3 works great with it. I'll be using mostly slick tricks and outback supremes this year though.
They only make the 3 blade in 100 grain correct? Maybe next year when I upgrade my bow I'll switch to these. Good to know they are there.
I love the 2 blade and can tell you my daughter two years ago killed her first buck in Illinois with a three blade Blood runner shooting only 42# out her Hoyt. She stuck the tip of the arrow out the other side so if she had enough KE you do for sure..
GFY, if you like the design I'd shoot those 3 blades with weight added. There's a big difference between their 1.5" cutting diameter and the 2.25" of the 2 blades.
Yeah I see that. But I'm really set on using a 125 grain and the 3 blade only comes in 100 grain. My arrows and set-up are already tuned for 125 grains and I really don't want to have to back off my draw weight or reduce arrow length to adjust. I've got everything right where I want it and I don't want to screw with anything set-up related. Edit: Oops I see you said weight added. I assume you mean insert weight. Yeah I could do that. If they made it in a 125 grain I would. I like my Magunus stingers and they give over a 2" hole as well. And like I said, next year when I upgrade bows I will probably try one of these heads. Thanks for the input. I take it that you would prefer the 3 blade over the 2 blade any day. Is that correct?
Nah, just in the case of someone shooting under 65ish KE. I like the 2 blade otherwise. I killed two deer last year with em. Put two monster holes each in those nannys.
Ben you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the damage, would ya??? I would like to see that because I have been testing the 2 blade out and I'm pretty positive thats what I'll be taking into the woods with me this fall.
