Ok well I'm gonna high jack this thread and ask the question for those who do use a flashlight in the DEER woods... Green or red ? In the usmc we always used red but not sure which for deer hunting?

I use green. Don't know if it matters or not.

Anyone who says they feels right at home in the woods in the dark and has never been spooked...is perhaps lying or current/former military ;) Hunt often enough and something is going to creep you out. But the passion for the hunt outweighs the fear...

I had some trouble when I first started going out on my own, in the dark. I am less stressed when I know the property inside and out or have a direct path. I'm on a new property this year and we have tons of yotes and coons. I don't like them, even better, they don't like me. But I know that first morning sit going down that trail in a new area will be spooky. I just tell myself that God has my back and as I watch the sun rise I am going to be WOWED by everything around me!

As for a hat light, I use them. Honestly, any 3 color light will do. I've used the cheap Cabela's hat light as well as the Browning one and they are real good. The Browning cap light is my favorite because the on/off switch is a slide rather than a push button.

Another help are Limb Lights (reflective twisty ties). I am a directionally challenged child so I get lost on my way to the grocery store. The Limb Lights placed at knee level have been a HUGE Godsend--especially when the trail twists and turns like crazy.

Being retired, I fear the sound of an alarm clock more than I fear dark woods. So if I wake up early, fine, but if I sleep in, no worries either, plenty of deer to be had midday too, and it's warmer!

And I never said anything at all about a CCW class. I may have misinterpreted this quote of yours... maybe. Let's let it go at that, but for clarity this is what I was referring to...

Not as scared walking in during gun season.bow season makes me nervous. The worst was walking back to my car and as I was packing up I saw glowing eyes charging me.herd panting thow o crap a coyote or wolf. Jump into the hatch of my car and closed it looked out the window and say a yellow lab that someone abounded out there. No tages but you can see it had a collar at one time. Serched for owners for over a few months then just fund her a good home. Have also walked out of woods with coyotes walking around me. Have jumped deer a few feet in front of me. Ever jump and get smacked in the face by a pheasent.yup you tinkle your pants a bit. Not afraid of getting lost anymore run the gps on my phone if I have to.
