I've taught my son and daugher to shoot for the last year or so. They have some 12 lb or so compound bows that they shoot on occasion. I have worked on safety, form, and everything else. I have always shot with them and they have never shot alone. Well today my six year old son begged me to shoot in the 30 degree temps. I had other kids to watch so I could not accompany him outside. I told him to shoot by himself on the deck at close distance and that if he proved himself that he could shoot out in the yard. I watched him closely and he passed the test. He was safe and shot for a very long time all by himself. I was so proud of him. I even saw him walk down into the yard and shoot a darn pumpkin at 8-9 yards! hahahaha. He is shooting off the shelf with no sights, and using his fingers without a release. I guess he is on his way to being self sufficient. I also saw him staring out in the woods, just watching. He has "it" already. He also got some "treestand" practice in today.
Before you know it he'll be asking to get out of school early so he can get back to his spot for an evening hunt! :D
Tree stand practice, now that was funny... I did the same for my 4 1/2 year old, Jake. The bow I bought is too heavy for him to pull back, so I will buy him a nerf bow for x-mas to get his little shoulders used to the bigger bow for next year. I Can Hardly Wait! Good stuff Brett
He cracks me up. He struggled with his bow a bit yesterday b/c he hadn't practiced for a couple of weeks b/c it has been so cold. I told him his muscles will remember tomorrow when he practices again...he just stared at me after I made that comment. lol. That 2 foot high treestand practice made me laugh like crazy. That boy is a darn good athlete already.
