A little rant for you all I guess.

The topic has been thieves heee lately. Heres an assclown story for ya. I got a buddy that is hunting state land 100miles east of me right now.

He texts me at 6am and says " I just had some guy messing with my stand"! This guy was trying to take my buddies climber off the tree he had left it in when he got out at last light yesterday.
He told my buddy "This is my spot, I hunt this tree". My friend told this guy "its state land find another tree and basically to get lost"

My buddy is in his stand but he watched the guy walk out of the woods and is now worried the guy might mess with his vehicle.

There really is some low life trash out there. I for the life of me dont understand how one sportsman can do this type of stuff to another.

How would you have handled this situation?

Who got there first this morning? If the other guy beat your buddy in I think he has every right to remove the climber from the tree and hunt there. The public land by me you can't leave equipment overnight so I may see it differently than you and your buddy. If I were in that situation though I probably would have left the climber and found another spot but I respect other hunters and their equipment. A lot of guys in this sport don't.

Im on the fence about this one. One part of me says the guy shouldnt have touched your buddy's property and claimed it was his tree. But then the other part says he took that risk when he left it in the tree and didnt get there first.

It's not like the guy threatened him, he left the area. Sounds pretty respectful to me.

This is all under the assumption the guy actually wanted to hunt that area and not steal the stand.

I think if it was me I would have pooped on the climber then moved far away. Jussayn! I can't stand people who claim public land as their own. 1st one there wins period. I don't care if you put in 100+ hours to improve the area. Your loss! I'm sure I'd feel differently if I would have left my stand and found someone messing with it. Once I had a guy put my truck in neutral and push it out of his way so he could get out. No harm done, but I would have pooped in the seat if it was me pushing the truck.

In our woods, me being your buddy, I'd of been in the wrong #1 for leaving the stand over night. #2 With the other guy being there first, First come, first served when hunting public land. Get up earlier. #3 I'd of just told him to leave the stand, hunt it n gone back later n removed it after realizing ( refer to #1) my mistake.

With that said, I don't know your laws for leaving climbers on public land. What I do know is that it gets ugly n that is why I never throw lock on's up where it's fair game or could become a free for all in his case.

I see a lot of stands in trees around here. They aren't mine n I stay away from them. I know not everyone does it and a lot of people feel THAT tree is mine or YOU shot my deer! Nothing is yours (spot) until you're occupying a tree for the day and you literally TAG a deer.

I got permission on private land that no one was supposed to be hunting in for over 15 yesrs. Well I knew trespassers were all over this place. I had three tree stands and two cameras taken. And they broke one of our ladders in half and left it their. Then came back and out up all kinds of signs threatening us. Well we didn't care. We're still hunting their. We've pulled 2 150" bucks and 1 125" buck out of their already. I have never seen a sign of any of them since. But it's because we're now hunting it with climbers and no cameras. Old fashioned way. Must be honest I have more fun this way.

Playing devils advocate, maybe the guy was just confused….It's 6am, dark and he's on public land. I'm not a thief, but if I was gonna steal a stand, it would be late at night, not 6am when the hunter might roll up on me, or see him at the car.

6am though? You really couldn't pick a worse time of day to try and take someone's stand.

Both your buddy and the other guy seem to have missed the point of state game land. That other guy has every right to use that tree if your buddy isn't using it but also has no bearing to say "this is my tree". Likewise, your buddy can't leave his stand in a tree and think he can claim dibs on it if he isn't using it at that specific time.

I agree with what alot of people are saying. Its public land period. Thats the reason the law is the way it is in WI. People put up a stand and claim the spot. How does he know the other guy hasnt been scouting that area for a while the honest way? When I want to "claim my spot" for gun season, I get out there an hour and a half before light. Its the only legal way. If it was gun season and someone put a stand up where I hunt and left it, I would sit right in front of it.

Yeah public land you just gotta roll with out. It's frustrating but that's what you gotta do. I leave hang ons on our public land. Already decided if I go to it and sometimes in it I'll keep walking. Biggest thing I'm scared of on that is them getting hurt and me getting in trouble even though it's legal to leave your stand up here in Kansas.

If its legal, whole different story. But like you said, if you show up and someone is there, I would find a different spot. I always have 3 or 4 diff places in mind in case someone is already there.

I guess I would have left that dudes: climber attached at the base of the tree and climbed right up with mine. Your buddy can come on up the tree and sit below me if he likes but he isn't going to be happy! tu: First come first serve on public ground. There are no reservations!

Yeah it is State land, and you are all right about leaving stands in the woods and the such. My buddy wasn't really claiming a spot he just left his stand overnight knowing he would be back in there in the morning. It is probably safer to leave your stand in the woods rather then drag it back to the hotel in the area he is hunting.

The guy was not in the wrong for being there, I just think it was wrong for him to mess with the stand.

I guess I just have more respect for other peoples stuff? If I was the stranger walking in to hunt a spot and noticed someones climber on the base of the tree, I am moving on too another spot(I have done it before and would do it again). I believe anybody that is messing around like this guy was, is up to no good. The treestand had a cable lock on it so he wasn't gonna steal it so who knows?
