For the first time in my life since my son was 5 (now 17) I dont' know what else I could tell him about playing basketball :D. All the years of going to every game, coaching for years, practicing in driveway or gym, watching college hoops and pointing things out, etc.... there's nothing left to say after what I saw yesterday. I'll admit, I push my kids in sports probably more than most. Not to the level of one of "those" parents as far as forcing it on them. If they didnt' want to do it or want the advise I'd back off. But after years and years of teaching and coaching him, it seems to have culminated and all came together. He's a 4 man and pretty big dude 6' 2" and built. Since he was young I would preach rebounding, defense and being aggressive. He was a little tentative starting out. Wouldn't post up, waited for the ball to come to him on rebounds, lazy on defense. He's now turned into a BEAST!!!!! He's a little blake griffin. The kid had 22 boards and 37 points yesterday. And honestly I sat in the bleachers and couldn't come up with a single thing I could tell him to do differently. Flawless! He came over to me like he usually does after for my feedback and I had nothing lol. Shook his hand and told him that was the single best all around game I've ever seen him play. What a cool feeling sittign there thinking about all the years and work leading up to this point. I was litterally sitting there half watching the game and half remembing all the pick up games in the driveway, coaching, teaching etc....
That is what I am talking about it NY! Like you, my dad pushed the heck out of me in sports. By the time I hit my senior year in highschool there was not much more he could say to me...mission complete. Congrats man, your son sounds like he learned a ton from you.
Very cool My Dad was much like you in that he would always critique my games afterwards. Being a teenager and thinking I was awesome, I always hated those rides back home. But my junior year, I scored 44 pts, with a triple double, and after the game, as I was expecting my Dad to find something I did wrong to harp on, all he said was "Dude...you were freaking awesome!" and then took me out ice cream One of the better moments of my life at that point.
Glad to hear all that hardwork from practice payed off and you can say it started with you and continued through the years.
2 thoughts. 1. Is he going to beable to grow up and be like Jeff and "play at the next level"?? LOL 2. If so, start working on him now to go to Duke. ROTFLMAO
. Yes he has indicated playing at the next level. He's actually probably a better baseball player. Not in my lifetime lol. He does have a 93 average in school too (which btw is first and foremost over anything he does in sports). Smart kid, respectful and hard working. The future looks good. Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Sure a narrow minded point of view. LOL You could stay at the Duke Washington and play golf every morning right out the back door. Although, while at Duke you'd want to visit the campus, kids and Coach K court. I know you wouldn't want him at that baby blue school.
My first thought as well. I had you pegged in the mid 30's... Thats cool about your son though, lemme ask you this, who wins the driveway games?
Ive had the upper hand for a very long time (no mercy either). Up until last summer I still did. Although the margin has drastically changed to nearly even. This summer I believe I'll be the one looking for mercy lol. I swear the kid grew 3 inches and put on 20 lbs. of muscle in 6 months. I may be able to get him with quickness and outside shooting. I used to be a go all out to the hole and meet you there/rebound machine. I don't think that tactic will work any longer. Should be interesting, but to be honest I don't have a chance lol.
Text message challenge has been sent to my son. It's going to be mid 40s here thursday (unbelievable). One on one game to 21 (win by 2) for the title. I just hope I have enough time to stretch out the old muscles lol. Maybe get a few practice sessions in, watch film and come up with a strategy. It's on!
