Ok, I've been shooting for over 30yrs and never had any trouble pulling any weight bow. Heck when I was full of testosterone in my 30's I shot 85lbs. I had not shot since about February because we have been on this big weight loss kick and I haven't taken the time to do a lot of shooting. I have lost nearly 70lbs since the first of February so I guess I must have lost some muscle mass as well. I'm 60yrs old and I shoot 65lbs but I've never struggled with pulling any bow. Guess I'll have to work on the muscles again. Anyway, just sharing with you guys. Blessings.........Pastorjim
Well it's a good thing to lose some weigt. I went from 215 to 170. I don't know what I did to loose that much weight by doing nothing different. The only thing I really did was cut back on pop. I shot the blaze at 68lbs fairly easily. Around January 21st my bow was stolen and then I lost about 30lbs when I wasn't shooting at all. I got my reezen three months later I could barely pull 55lbs. Since then I've worked back up to 71-72lbs but I'm thinking of lowering back to about 68lbs.
Shane keep working and turn that bow up to 11 never heard of a hunter complain they hit a deer too hard with an arrow.
Today's bows are much more efficient than bows of the past. I shot a buck last fall with my bow set at 58lbs and the arrow was 6" in the dirt after passing through the deer. A heavier bow would only stick it farther in the dirt LOL.
I only shoot 50lbs and have gotten several arrows to pass through. I can't shoot as far out as a high pound draw hunter but with 35 yards if its brown its down.
Jim you and the Mrs look fantastic, guessing you haven't had one of those first class cheese balls in a minute.
Thanks TJ, It's been a lot of hard work. And you're right, the cheeseballs have been on hold for a while. Blessings........Pastorjim
I've lost 21 lbs since April and what I read is 30% of weight loss is muscle. So with dieting you have to add an hr of weight training every other day to counter that.
I have been doing 2hrs of cardio 4 days a week. In the beginning I was doing about 30-40min of weights but I just gradually started doing cardio exclusively. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to some weight training. Thanks for the tip. I had never read that before. Blessings...........Pastorjim
congrats on the weight loss brother and just start shooting daily if possible and you get back at it.
Congrats on the massive weight loss!! Getn old sucks, but youll get back to pulling your draw weight, build some muscle back, itll happen!
Congratulations on the weight loss! I'm sure you will be able to get back tot he desired draw-weight you are looking for! Some day I may get over 40 - but it just seems it's about impossible!
I know the feeling I have lost 80lb's myself. I found no amount of weightlifting helped as much as buying a longbow for practice. I draw and hold as long as possible and then shoot. My back strength has gone thru the roof. I have worked my way up to a 65lb longbow. I only shoot practice with it but man its made a compound feel like nothing.
An elevated heart rate is predominately burning protein from muscle for an energy source. The largest %of fat being being burned as an energy source is at rest. The harder you work, the more muscle your body is eating up, but with that said, get back to shooting, try to lift some weights a few times a week and it will all come back, and when you gain a few pounds of muscle back you will feel 100% better than you ever did before loosing the weight. Nothing is better than hitting the woods in the fall after busting your butt for 6-8 months knowing you have the energy to push a littler harder, further, and stay out there longer! congrats on your efforts and success Pastor Jim!
Thanks for the encouraging words. I have decided to begin alternating weight lifting and cardio every other day. While I'm glad for the weight loss, I have definitely lost some muscle mass. And at my age I don't want to do to much more of that. Just trying to find balance seems difficult. Blessings.........Pastorjim
Working the weights is a good idea but I don't think any exercise will be better than actually shooting your bow. I could be wrong though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Fre
Congrats on the weight loss. Like the song says "Do what you do, do well" We have to pull a bow, lift and carry a carcass. But before that we have to get there on legs of steel (well maybe). RC
When I lost 75lbs I lowered my bow pounds down about 6 lbs. Just for ease of pull and ability to hold longer...I wasn't saddened though because I was a lot healthier....need to fight back off the 10 I gained back actually.
Eat more protein. Consume protein within 30 minutes of completing the cardio or weight lifting. This tells your body that it does not need to consume its own protein. As someone mentioned, the body will consume its own body's protein if we do not give it more protein. I used to be very bad. I wasn't getting enough average amount of protein. I started doing races and a friend noted that I wasn't taking in the minimum needed for a non active person. I increased my protein, I started building more muscle, feeling better and doing better during races. My brother gave me this tip: cottage cheese has a ton of protein. I was very bad for breakfast. I did not get protein. I switched to eating one cup of cottage cheese and muscle mass was easier to achieve. For my first bow, I went from 35DW to 50DW without any weight lifting by concentrating on my protein intake. IHMO, women struggle increasing their DW because they don't add in enough protein to help their muscles. Eat protein after shooting, especially, if the DW was increased. Women also benefit from drinking milk following exercise. Gatorade isn't as helpful for women. Women do better drinking milk. I forgot why. As we age, it gets even harder for us to keep muscle. Congratulations on the weight-loss. Just my 2cents. -Patricia
