Well, today my best-friend Matt and I decided to hit up his family farm and do a little hunting. There are several pheasants on the property but we decided that we wanted to focus on grouse. We put on a lot of miles and we were crossing a cornfield when Matt and I started discussing taxidermy and how we would love to have a nice large fox squirrel mounted. We took a few steps and a squirrel barked in a large oak right beside us. We looked and it appeared to be a fox squirrel but it had went around the backside of the tree, so Matt went around the back and he came back to my side. I saw it was a fox squirrel and decided to take the shot. The squirrel fell and I was actually excited I did alot of squirrel hunting as a kid around my house and never saw a fox squirrel, they aren't rare, but they just aren't in the area. So anyways, I have the squirrel packed in the freezer now and he is going to be making a trip to the taxidermist next weekend.... he is a beautiful squirrel and I can't wait to see him beside my buck, turkey, coyotoe, and fish! :D Here is a photo of him, he is a big fox squirrel, but there is still one running on this property that we saw in archery season that has atleast another pound on him... that squirrel has been nicknamed the "state record fox squirrel" by the 5 guys that have saw him this year :p He is laying beside my Remington 870 Express Super Magnum 12 gauge.
Congrats on the red! My neck of the woods is just opposite. Full of big red fox squirrels and we have to sit and wait to get a shot at a grey.
Ours are black, white and many variations in between. I killed one when I was 10 or so that was solid black with a white head. Wish I could have him back to mount. I see a few every year but just have not felt the urge...usually caught up in looking at them until they are gone. Sweet pics Jason and cant wait to see pictures of the mount..
Thanks guys, I will post pics of the mount whenever I get it back. I didn't, but Matt was able to get one. It was a slow day for hunting, we saw one doe, one rabbit, the grouse Matt shot, and 3 squirrels. We are probablly going out again next weekend and hopefully we can get on more grouse.
That's a big fox squirrel. And it seems depending on the region "red" squirrel means different things. Here, red squirrels are those tiny little annoying buggers. I think some call them pine squirrels.
I wish I'd gotten a photo. When we were in KY, this yr., I saw one of these hopping through the woods with a 1/2 ear or corn in his mouth!....lol "You guys have some Boone and Crockett squirrels" - Will Nelson
Shultzy... I won't even waste my ammo on those reds. It's grays or nothing for me when I squirrel hunt. They are tough eating not to mention you have to skin them immediately upon kill or your in trouble.
I'm not sure if you're talking about red squirrels or fox squirrels, rybo referenced this. I'm with Shultzy, i think they're delicious.
I'm talking Fox and Gray Squirrels 2 lunger. No they are not tough In the least, It's how you cook them. Our Fox and Grey squirrels here are absolutely huge too, never saw any bigger. We have booner squirrels behind every tree here, that's a fact. :D
Anyone and everyone is welcome to squirrel hunt my ground anytime you like. I don't hunt them and won't eat them. My woods is loaded with reds and grays....no trophy fees!! LOL
We don't have many squirrels here with the lack of trees but the ones here are red squirrels. They get pretty big here and are mean if you get them cornered!! Always fun when you squeeze through the small door in our grain dryer to check it over before firing it up and one comes barreling out of there and you are blocking his escape route. Been more then one guy screaming like a little girl when that happens. LOL Tim
