LC - I meant "average," in the sense that most bucks (as stated above) have the genetic potential to at least hit the 115" mark, and most (read: majority) guys would think that's a pretty respectable deer.

In fact, more often than not, if a 115 inch buck dies at the hands of the local fellas that I know, he's headed straight to the taxidermist. No questions asked, that's a great buck.

Now, the Mark Drury's of the world wouldn't even take the bow off the hook for a 115" deer (because he has the financial firepower to hunt a bigger class of animal), but most average guys would, and they'd be damn proud of it. Mark Drury isn't the "average" guy. He's got resources and acreage at his disposal that most people just don't have.

Give that little forkhorn a few years and some good food to eat, and he'll make somebody a pretty proud guy.

I wasn't trying to be condescending - sorry if it came across that way - just making the point that you're looking at a deer that could easily push into the 120's, and that caliber buck would make most hunters pretty damn proud.

Since you are obviously new to bowhunting, here's a little tip. Never worry about what anyone thinks of you as a hunter. Hunt for yourself, not others. Don't worry what they consider you. Sit back a little, observe and learn, and don't try to give advice on something you don't have much or any experience with. You'll do fine. The passion is obviously there.

Average doesn't always mean you don't try. There are many more factors that just effort. For example, I would be considered a below average basketball player by NBA standards. Doesn't mean I don't try my ass off when I play.

It doesn't mean that, but its still true. I don't give 110% on the court anymore. I'm too old for that ****. But even if I did give 110%, I would still be considered below average by NBA standards.

To be totally honest I do consider myself an average hunter, but I'm a very successful average hunter. I love hunting deer, I love killing deer and I love eating deer, and I'll be damned if I'm going to take something that I love doing and turn it into a job that I have to work so hard at or something that consumes so much of my time that I don't have time for the other pleasures in life. While I wouldn't mind killing a buck with a huge rack, it's not my primary objective and it probably never will be. I don't need that big rack hanging on my wall as a measure of my success. I'm perfectly content to continue hunting the way I hunt. I've always said that I'm a deer hunter, not a trophy hunter. If big racks and bragging rights are what everyone is after, that's fantastic and I wish you all the best. It's just not me, and I refuse to believe that it somehow makes me inferior to anyone who does have those goals.

Got it Fran. I didn't read it as you being condescending. I was simply curious as to exactly how you meant "average" in relation to hunters. As I said, I must be average because I'd take a 115" buck and be ecstatic. He wouldn't go on the wall, though. For me to even consider putting one on the wall he'd have to be so big that it'd be a shame not to mount him.

    Average hunter

Average, as stated by the late Paul Harvey means, "The Best of the Lousiest, or the Lousiest of the Best". I don't want to be that either, but ultimately we all decide that for ourselves.
