This is the first time I have seen this buck. I know he is young and although if he stepped out as my first bow kill I would let him walk. I just have to see how big he ends up getting. Just thought I would share and see what you guys think in terms of having potential. For this area anyways, I believe he does. Look at his left front leg though. To me it looks as though it may have been broken at some point.

Stick if he walked out in front of me for my first day out with a bow he would be one of my proudest trophies.

Not bad. Looks like one of last years fawns. I agree, something messed up his leg and he looks on the skinny side as well. If he doesn't put on weight by the fall i would put him out of his misery.

Yeah, let him walk unless he comes in and you can tell he is limping or in misery.

Considering what the average hunter considers to be a trophy caliber buck, almost ALL whitetail bucks have trophy potential (including this one).

Shoot whatever makes you happy, but understand that if everybody goes out and shoots up the yearlings, eventually, all you'll have left are yearlings.

That deer is fine. All he needs is time.

I have a plan in place only to take big bucks and does and let the young guys walk. I want bucks like this to grow to at least 3 years old. I have a feeling I know what injured him. The brither that I wont let back on my property to hunt. This could very well be the fawn he shot with a 410 3 pellet buck shot last season. We never recovered it and there was a blood trail (not much of one) that went on forever through high grass and brush. We tracked it for a good 2 hours then rain set in. I looked all over for hours after the grass dide off good and never found a carcuss. I believe there is a very good chance this could have been it. That leg being hit he wouldn't have had any vital damage and the shot placement makes since since my brother says it was facing him when he shot. About an hour after he shot we started tracking. We got close enough for it to take off running again and there was nothing but moving grass and we couldn't see it. If he is walking ok I will let him walk. He deserves to live a full 3-5 years after that experience. I beieve I will name this one. Not sure what yet though.

If he was shot last year, there is absolutely no reason to believe he isn't doing just fine from that injury. He would have died from that a long time ago. Just because he might have limp, doesn't mean he isn't a healthy deer.

Fran, would you be willing to expound on your personal definition of "average hunter" as used above?

I think "majority" would have been a better word than "average". Unless he was referring to the hunters skills. Lets look at majority, a subset of a group consisting of more than half of its members, first.

The majority of hunters want to kill any legal buck. Doesn't matter if its 1.5 or 4.5. So you take all the hunters, and ask them to stand in 3 groups. 1) They shoot any deer, also known as true meat hunters. 2) They just want to kill any legal buck. 3) They will pass on younger/smaller bucks to kill an older/larger buck. Group 2 is going to be the largest, or majority.

Now lets look at average , or the central tendency of a data set, is a measure of the middle value of the data set. Now you rank those hunters skills from 1-100. 1 being the lowest, 100 being the highest. The majority will probably fall in 25-75 range, or middle. The average hunter is most likely the majority, also.

So in theory, either word will work, but I don't want to speak for Fran.

    Buck looks good to me.

Just about any buck in the country can reach the 130+ mark at 4.5....they all have potential.

    And thats his name.

I know I have to start somewhere but, I still want to let them go so they can grow. So far I have 4 different fawns on camera this year which means last season was a good breading season as far as I can tell. I feel like there are more I havent caught on camera. We harvested six total last season. My first bow harvest I am sure will be a doe. I am happy with that.

I agree with the others. At that age they all have potential. You just never know what they will turn into with age. That buck could be a late drop so he could have super potential. All bucks' potential ends whenever they become a pile of meat on the forest floor.

Actually, Matt, I was just curious as to what Fran had on his mind when he wrote "average hunter" but thanks for the math lesson anyway. :tu:

I'm guessing he meant most hunters just want to kill a buck, any buck.

No matter what the deffinition anyone gives for average hunter, I don't ever want to be considered average. I am new to hunting but, I don't think I would be classified as the average beginner and hope I never fall into the average cattagory anytime in my life. Of course thats how I look at life as well. Average is for people who do not want to give their 110%. They are happy with giving what is required if that, no more than they have too.
