Yep, I think I felt an equal amount of pain as what a women feels during child birth today. Tiffany and I were out trout fishing one of the local streams and I hooked into a nice brook trout, after reeling him in I went to lift him out of the water and he went nuts. During his episode, the back hook on my Yo-Zuri Pins Minnow went into the underside of my middle finger on my left hand (where it meets with my palm). The hook dug in past the barb and the fish was still on the front hook thrashing. I quickly removed the trout from the lure and then grabbed my pliers and pulled the hook out of my finger. Talk about pain.... this was the first time I had had a hook bury in past the barb. Well, I get settled in and cast out again and hook another trout, about a 17" rainbow. I thought I had him played out but when I went to pick him up he went nut like the previous fish. Next thing I know I feel a pain that put me to my knees. I look down and I have a hook in my thumb, right on the crease of my nail and aimed inwards toward the middle of the thumb, meanwhile I have a nice rainbow going nuts. I proceeded to get the trout off the hook and grab my pliers. I hooked onto the hook and knew that I was in for a very unpleasant experience. I pulled as hard as I could and the hook wasn't moving. I called Tiffany over to try and help me but once she got a look at it, she about passed out. At this time I figured that I would have to either push the hook the whole way through and cut it off or I would have to go to the hospital. I tried pushing the hook through but there was too much meat and I couldn't do it. I decided to try and pull it out one more time and after about 10 minutes of straight pulling on the hook it popped out. The pain was ridiculous, I actually started getting a fever from it and felt like hurling in the stream. Once I got the hook out I soaked my thumb in Germ-X to try to prevent infection and I went back to fishing. My hand was shaking badly for almost an hour. It is still sore now, but I can deal with it, I just have to make sure to keep it clean! I am pretty sure that was about as much pain as childbirth :d :d :d
man that sucks. make sure you keep both wounds clean. i'm assuming the yozuri's didnt have rusty hooks
They were fresh lures, no rust at all. I am definetly keeping an eye on the wounds. I have had some bad injuries before, but this pain was different, it almost disabled me from functioning properly. As far as kidney stones go.... I'll leave that one to you guys, this was enough pain for me!!!
I haven't had any kids so I don't know the pain of child birth... but I can tell you, I've had treble hooks in my fingers (that had to be pushed through), caught myself in a 220 conibear, put a divot in my backbone by falling backwards on some metal, had my ankle laid open by an angry raccoon and all of those pains together aren't as bad as bad menstrual cramps. I've been told by my childbearing friends that childbirth is like menstrual cramps x50. So... suck it up. It wasn't that bad. :D
Buck.....I've buried past the barb too. Hurts like hell. I remember this technique from an old issue of Outdoor Life and it works great. It makes a pretty loud POP when the barb comes back out of the skin. Removing a Fish Hook A fishhook embedded just under the surface of the skin can usually be removed without the aid of a doctor. Do Not slide the hook up through the skin, cut off the barb, and pull the fish hook back out in reverse. Instead, Loop a string around the curve of the hook and grasp the string with one hand. With the other hand, gently press down on the hook's shaft to free the barb from surrounding tissue. Once the barb is disengaged, yank quickly on the string to pull the hook from the wound.
I was just waiting for a woman to jump on... Christine's answer was classic. NEVER... EVER... EVER.... EVER.... as a guy... say that you've felt anything REMOTELY close to the pains associated with childbirth. EVER. Grasshopper.
Bummer man. Keep an eye on those holes, and get some medical attention if it even thinks about looking infected.
I've heard if you want to experience that kind of pain a man should try a Brazilian wax job! Ain't nobody putting hot wax around my "boys" then ripping it off!!
Better than a broadhead I guess. To keep on fishing, well that's manly I guess, you passed the test. Hope it heals up for you with no problems.
Ive had the exact same thing happen. It was a treble hook and i went to get it out of the trout's mouth and he shook the hook right through my fingernail. Then he continued to shake making the pain unbearable. I finally pinned him down and got him off, then I had to man up and rip it out. I was with my girlfriend's dad and I was cussing like a sailor...lol
Yep, mine didn't go through the thumb nail, it went right down the side of the nail and curled under the nail, the whole time I have the trout thrashing about. I am sure I said a couple "choice" words! I can't complain though, about two hours after it I ended up catching a 20 smallmouth that was chasing around a few 17"-18" rainbows.... he couldn't resist a Manns Hardnose Frog skimming across the top of the hole they were in!
