I have a feeling this is state by state, but does anyone know the legality of this? I was tracking a deer a few weeks ago that I eventually found dead, but I had my ccw just in case. It didn't occur to me until recently that it might not actually be legal to put down a wounded animal with a handgun during bow season.

    My state is Virginia.

I'm NY you have to be a licensed dog tracker to dispatch a deer with.a pistol that was wounded by a bowhunter

In Iowa, you can't track a deer on private property with any kind of weapon. That means even if I shoot it on my land and it jumps the fence and lays down I can't walk over with my bow and get it. Have to leave the bow behind. I'm guessing what you did is not legal here.

Not sure of the legality of it in Indiana. However, I do know it's legal to carry a handgun while bowhunting ONLY if you have a permit to carry. I'd advise you to call your DNR and ask them.
