Would you leave a well established, large company (5000+ employees), in which you are firmly entrenched and stable, to go to a small company (roughly 100 employees) for a position that they are creating just for you so you can create your own department?
How would the benefits(pay, vacation, job safety) in the new job compare to those of the well established company? Seem's almost like being able to start your own company w/o the leg work. Seems like a good deal to me as long as the factors I previously mentioned are similar.
Pay would be slightly more and vacation would be the same. Job safety is the question, but the smaller company has doubled in size in the last 3 years, so they are expanding, which is promising.
Seem's like a good position to me. If the company continues to expand, you would be in there at the right time to take part in the growth. For someone who was middle aged it may not be the right move, but for someone younger able to bear the risk, it may be a smart choice.
Sounds like a pretty good opportunity. Plus the stock options may be a tremendous benefit if u get in on the ground level and the new company continues to steadily incline and grow.
It would depend on so many things. -how much you like the current job & co-workers? -do you know anyone @ the small Co? -can you leave the big company on good term? -do you have to relocate? -is there opportunity to substantially grow with the small company? -how stable are you sitting financially? -do the benefit packages compare? .... ....... For me, the reward of getting in on the ground floor with the new Co. would have to out weigh the risk of leaving. Especially if I was happy in the first place. .... this is probably no help.
IMO, there is no job safety with large companies...that should come from continuing to develop and market your own skill set. We are all different, so one answer does not fit all, but I left a big company in which I was very successful in about 18 years ago to go to a small independent company which I was able to buy into and have more say in the operations. It was scary and risky at the time, especially with a 2yo son, but it was best career move for me, both financially and job satisfaction.
I'm content and I like most of my co-workers. Yes I have a very good friend that works with them I would be moving to a direct competitor, so I don't know. Nope Moreso than where I am at now Quite well Very similiar
potential ownership with the smaller company has been discussed My wife is 7 months pregnant, so yeah, switching jobs right now would be quite horrifying.
Sounds like an excellent position for you. One question is how stable is the new company vs. the old? Also, hypothetically; the new company goes belly up... what are your career options?
Would your awesome skillset make you an easy hire somewhere else if this job dissolves? If so, go for it. There would be a lot of pride in helping a smaller company grow. And, if you are an easy hire somewhere else, there really is little risk involved. Could be huge potential financially to get in on a smaller growning company. Go for it!
Alright, I just needed some reassurance that this move would not be absolutely crazy with a baby on the way. This is still hypothetical as of right now, as there is no offer yet, but I have had 3 separate meetings with the smaller company, and per yesterday's meeting with all the company owners, "the potential for an offer is in my favor".
Knowing what you said about the new opportunity, this would be my only other consideration. If you believe you can pick something up (even if temporary) quickly if SHTF, I'd pull the trigger quickly. Being able to get in early with a small company and grow with it is an amazing thing that can/will change your life, as well as future income/career potential down the road.
Well I'm kinda in the same spot right now except it's a position with the same company that would require moving halfway across the country and opening a new office, and I've got a baby that's due in 3 months. Lots of risk, but if it pays off it will change my entire career and will allow me to keep my wife at home. I'm comfortable knowing if it falls through I can get a job pretty quickly so I pulled the trigger.
Does the new company offer benefits from day one? The job change sounds promising, but not if you have to pay all the hospital costs for the new baby out of pocket.
