So Monday my godfather from KY is flying in for a week of turkey hunting. This will be beyond special for me! As a young teenager I lived with him for some time and he taught my invaluable lessons, on life, women, the woods, deer hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, you name it. I truly would not be the man I am today if it weren't for him. Since those years as a teenager life in general has prevented us from spending much time together in the woods. In fact we have only shared one day afield since! A week together with him killin turkey and fishing is really a dream hunt for me (even though I am tagged out and will really be playing guide) He isn't as young as he used to be and hard to say how many more opportunities like this I will have with him. (tearin up sheesh) So out of anticipation I am starting this thread today and will be posting updates of our time together throughout the week (hopefully to include some dead turky pics!) Monday can't get here soon enough!!!!!!!!
That is absolutely awesome and what its all about man!! I sure hope you guys get on the birds but even if you don't that's not the important thing. What a great opportunity for you guys to catch up (in person) and bond and enjoy life. Hats off and good luck brother!! I'm gonna subscribe to this thread to follow along with you guys.
Pretty cool of you to share that. We don't always think about those that "brought us along" in our life's journey, but you certainly have. Good for you, I hope you have a great time together.
Well got on some good ones this morning. Called in three strutters he took a shot but missed. Lol in all fairness he is using my gun and it was the first time he had shot it. Anyway beautiful morning so far. We just moved about a 1/4 mi up my property and just started to work another bird. He's a ways off yet. Time will tell
Wow!! That bird came in FAST. Closed in over 500+ yes in the time it took me to make the last post. Had him at thirty yards but he couldn't get a clear shot. Birds are very vocal today. Stay tuned
Well great hunt this morning overall. Lots of action. Very humbling to hunt along someone so knowledgable about turkeys and turkey hunting. Did I mention that Terry is 71 still hunts hard, has multiple Grand slams and is on the board of directors for the KY state chapter of NWTF. Lol. Anyway we had a wonderful morning in the woods. Even with all the action the best part was probably just sitting against the trees catching up on things and shooting the breeze. Grabbing a bite to eat and we'll be back at it!
The afternoon was fairly slow as it typically is. Nothing more than a couple courtesy gobbles and some great conversation. After the miss this morning I had him take a couple shots on paper and found he was shooting quite high with my gun ( he didn't want the hassle of flying with his) thinkin it due to him being used to shooting a scope on his turkey gun and mine has front and rear fiber optics. After a making a couple of adjustments them birds are gonna be in trouble in the morning!
Birds today have been a polar opposite from yesterday minimal gobbling on roost this morning. Two pitched down about 80 yds in front of us then proceeded to walk directly away from us. Lol. Not sure what the deal is but it doesn't rely matter cause were still havin a blast. Just settled back in after a late breakfast we'll see if there is a high noon gobbler lookin to play.
Well pretty decent morning today even though we didn't kill a bird. He passed on a two year old at 25 yds. I just laughed. I'd have killed him in a heartbeat. But we have had an amazing couple days. Another couple of sits to go yet. Here are some pics from this morning I thought were cool
Well the week came to a close yesterday as I took him to the airport and we said our goodbyes. We had an amazing week with tons of action and lots of opportunities he passed on a couple of two year old birds and unfortunately missed a beard dragger the first morning 30 minutes into the hunt. He just isn't interested in killin a bird that isn't a hoss. The older birds just were either not playing or were henned up. Lots of action from the 2 year olds though. Killin birds really wasn't the focus of the week anyway. Family and good times were and we certainly had that! Lots of good food and good laughs for all of us. It was hard to see him go but we already made our plans for next spring and set up a trip for me to come hunt the KY farm this fall to see if I can't put an arrow into a nice Ky whitetail. Before he left he gave me 4 custom calls made by Mike Gorgachuck from Canada who is a world class turkey caller and call maker, which was very special to me, and I will use with pride. In short a week I will remember for the rest of my days for sure. A couple final pics here of him with my little ones. I look forward to looking back at this thread in the future to relive the week. So Terry...... Till next time my dear friend. I love ya
