Do you think hunting videos do more to help hunting, or more to hurt it ? What I'm getting at is this: Do hunting videos promote and expand a safe, healthy, traditional hobby that exposes people to the wonderful outdoors ?? or Has hunting videos and their commonly associated "management" opinions cast a new dark cloud over hunting ? If so, has this cloud been divisive by seperating hunters who hunt for racks vs. hunter who hunt for the love out the outdoors and the taste of the animal ?
I hate the ride the fence, here....but.... I think they do both.. Some production companies show educated, well spoken, professional, down to earth, realist hunters. The general populace of the Country can associate with these gentleman and ladies. Thus, making "hunting" a little more acceptable... They[videos] also show QDM tactics and how to better your trophy hunting endevors. More people are killing bigger bucks with the knowledge gained from watching these videos.(so we read). On the flip side, When I speak to elder hunters, they rarely focus on the rack. Usually, their enthusiasm is based soley on the hunt, itself. I do hear these same gentlemen reference the weight of the deer, but, rarely the rack. I think the videos are semi-divisive..QDM popularity seems to have driven a wedge, of sorts, between hunters. We have the trophy hunters and the hunters. The hunters cant stand those of us who really do try our best to practice QDM, and, generally speaking, we cringe when we hear of the "regular" hunters shooting younger bucks, before they've reached their prime. Also, I think QDM makes hunting more complicated..I enjoy what I do for QDM, such as planting plots, manipulating the property, scouting for specific deer, letting lil ones walk, and, so on...but with my main focus on another hobby, again, hunting seems to be taking a simplified roll, for me. I want to shoot "decent" bucks, not just the biggest one around or nothing... Anyway...Thats my take....You ??
Drop tine, I agree with you. I have a strong opinion that these hunting videos can hurt the "name" of the sport. I feel that these hunting videos should be completely real. I film my hunts and keep everything real! I don't add in myself drawing my bow back, or re-enact tracking the deer and come up to it and it's all shined up! Hunting is about enjoying the outdoors, wildlife, spending time w/ family members, and creating memories! On the flip side, while doing all of this, I still am serious about QDM and mature whitetails. I respect trophy hunters and I respect meat hunters because and I would put myself as both being a college student. My hunting partner and I live together at college and we live off our venison, while also pursuing mature whitetails and improving QDM.
I feel that though its very exciting to watch some big bucks get killed and just see some of the interesting racks on these bucks... Oh and not to mention some of the tactics used to get these animals is also very interesting ( even if most are shot on some type of ranch be it free roaming or fenced) .. I still see the videos and TV shows as ways to make money in the hunting industry. Im sure since they have been been filming kills that the hunting industry has doubled in profits or i bet even higher... We have had bigger deer herds let alone more deer killed over the past who knows how many years... probably since Aldo Leopold brought up the idea of killing does to raise deer herds. And since we have slowly began to move into the whitetails territory, there are less and less places for the "big guys" to find refuge and we are seeing bigger bucks taken by weekend hunters. So if these hunting shows have helped hunting then it maybe just in awareness and that's about it. But like i said i do enjoy watching them, but i do feel im just filling the pockets of hunting industry big wigs. Who im sure are not putting a whole lot of money back into the sport and animals that have helped them get there.
Both. Alot of them are unrealistic for what the average hunter can accomplish. That's the bad image they spread IMO.
Im more and more disliking them, because they portray the image that anyone can go out and shoot a monster buck or a deer nontheless as long as you can shoot a bow or gun! Not too mention the fact that they like to show kill after kill and no tracking, and to me this shows two things.....one that every deer shot dies quickly with a bow!!!....The other bad part is that it just makes us look like cold blooded killers just out their to kill ****! IMHO the whole sport is going into the crapper unfortunately.....PETA has a ton of pull and all the video producers do is help give us a bad name as hunters! It's really sad to imagine how bad things are going to be in 20yrs from now! Our kids arent gonna have a chance to carry out our tradition of hunting!....Someday (as much as it sucks to say)I believe bowhunting will be banned all together!....Its inhumane.....bla bla bla! The other bad thing about videos is the fact that they are constantly endorsing and pushing all these "great" products on us less wealthy hunters out there! My favorite is the new improved scent killer that Brock Lesnar makes supercharged...seriously WTF people????
