How do you all hunt the windy days, or do you stay home on them days and hit the woods right after a the wind dies down. I personally don't bother to go in the woods if it's blowing over 25 km/h with gusts higher, but do generally head in after it has calmed down. Just wondering what has been working for all you hunters out there. I also only hunt public land which really makes no difference. I do head in after a cold front hits but this time of year is always a bit slow.
Rifle hunting I will sit in my box stand in any weather, there is Zero chance of shooting a deer when not hunting. Bowhunting is different because my box stand doesn't move, my bow stand in a tree does. The odds of a clean kill happening when there is that much variation in aiming because of the tree swaying is enough for me to get out of the tree.
I used to believe that deer do not move much if the wind is too high, there are times when it does not matter.
I always wonder about this too. Until the end of October/beginning of November I only can usually get out once a week to hunt. Well Sunday morning its going to be 15mph wind with 30mph gusts and that's the day I can get out. Will probably still go, but Im not expecting to see much.
If it's gusting badly (30mph+), I typically either try to hunt a bottom/thermal cover area, but more often than not, I will just not do it, because in those locations, my wind stay may swirl even if I'm out of the very heavy winds.
Hit the big woods or find a spot you can slip into undetected. Hunt the bottom of a gulley that the deer will travel through. Deer will still move in the wind.
If it's too windy just I'll hunt another day. During the rut though, I'll hunt whatever weather conditions I have, except an extended heavy rain.
High wind imo is about the worse outside of a down pour or a blizzard. But when it let's up its gametime.
