so whats your average ratio of hours spent in the tree stand to deer killed? So far for me, its 16 : 0. I'm a newbie and I understand patience is a virtue, but I'd like to be able to get a shot off sometime this season.

Some other ratios for this season:

16 : 1 -- Hours in the stand to number of times busted by a deer

16 : 1 -- Hours in the stand to number of times busted by my neighbors yappy dogs as I was setting up the climber

1 : 1 -- Obsessed newbie hunter to increasingly irritated wife

Neuse, there are some seasons where I kill a deer within 4-5 hours. And there are other seasons where it might take me 60-80 hours of stand time to kill just one deer. So just be patient and you will be good to go.

I woulds be afraid to know. I get my share of deer but also spend a ton of time in the stand. There are lots of times I could have shot a deer.

neuse, as of this weekend I spend on average 55hrs hunting to harvest a deer. Which equates to about 14-15 hunts.

Welcome to the site by the way :tu:

Patience is key. I didn't get my first shot or deer until January 23rd of last year. I hunted approx. 25 days before then, so just give it time. I know its frustrating but if you hang in there, the opportunity will come. These deer are smart and it takes time to get comfortable and to understand all the variables that go into this sport. Good luck and happy hunting!

Mine varies a lot. Some years it just seems to all fall into place very easily. Others I spend a lot of time just to get a few deer. And I suppose it depends on how picky I am also. So far this year I could have shot deer 3x, but didn't.

A lot. um... yeah. Been hunting since 2004. Got skunked one year. I believe it's because I couldn't be in the stand enough. Honestly to me, sitting in the hardwood or on a field edge is what I look forward to almost more than killing a deer. Don't get me wrong, I WANT to kill a deer when I go out. But the peace and simplicity you can experience by sitting alone with God in the hardwood, is unlike anything in the world. When you come to appreciate this, you will enjoy your time in the stand more. Best of Luck! Hang in there! (pun intended). :tu:

Hey Neuse, I am assuming by your name you are in NC? or am i way off? If you are in NC and close to Johnston County ( hence my screen name) shoot me a PM

First 2 years I hunted esclusively with a bow , 2 shots in 2 years, no hits, no kills... then it started coming together a little better, but i still get skunked alot more then i come home with meat. a lot goes into learning with this sport.
This year i put down a doe on the second day of archery season. I have had 4 other sits since that day averaging 5 hours each without even seeing a deer anywhere near bow range., hearing pleanty dancing all around me in places where i was not... but no chances. So as of this year I'm at about 30 :1 . And its been an exceptional early season so far!

definitely spend more time in the stand (and blind) than deer taken over the years. sometimes it just happens that way

thanks all for the info -its good to get some perspective when not really knowing what to expect. Even without any deer yet, I've already found that a 'bad' day hunting is still far better than the best day rotting away in the office. Some peace and solitude in the woods is not a bad 2nd place prize.

That's the attitude to have! I love just being out there if for nothing else than to collect my thoughts and get away from this crazy@$$ world we're living in.
