I have recently began hunting a pine tree farm. I have done alot of reading from alot of different sources and have gathered a good bit of information. But I would like to see if y'all have any tips or information on hunting planted pines?

Pines offer great shelter from the elements. Use this to your advantage.

Deppending on how the pines are planted and how large they are this same "shelter cover" also keep the sun light out. Find the vegatation in the pines and you should find an abundance of deer droppings and beds. If there is an area with a couple downed trees in the planting, I would focus my efforts around it.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Would you recommend hunting in the pines or on the outskirts?

I would suggest the outskirts unless you find an area in the inside that has light reaching it. Walk the planting. If you find an area with a bunch of blowdowns/deadfalls concentrate there.

    Good luck,

I hunt pines if they are available and I have them on 3 of the properties I hunt. I would for sure put your stand in one. You can actually sit in one with out any scent worry at all. Pine trees are the best source of scent elimination there is. I have never been scented sitting in one either. They also give a good source of cover, if used right. The deer will use pockets as a bedding area. I've sat out storms under pine trees and never even got wet. Deer know this and use it to their advantage. In hard times when food is at a low they will eat the bark and needles and a lot of times hunters complain of the gamey taste. They'll also paw up the roots as they are softer to eat. I find the gamey taste comes from the deer living around Pine trees and eating it. Here around the city of Edmonton we have very little stands of pine so the deer don't get the gamey taste. Like Dave mentioned above look for the blow downs ,they make good ground blinds too. Good luck and good hunting.

PS A lot of people like that gamey taste, I for one don't
