On our land we recently cleared out a large part of the creek overgrown with honey suckle and other brush to get some fallen logs out and back to our house to burn. We did this over the summer. Now I see tons and tons of tracks in that area going through the creek (which is dry about half the year and wet the other half) I was wondering if you guys have any experience hunting over creeks or anything. I'm just looking for some advice on what to do. Thanks.
One of my favorite stands is set up over a creek crossing. There tends to be quite a lot of activity there.
from my experience deer like to cruise by bodies of water. not to say they like to chill and shoot the bull there, but they definately like to spend a decent amount of time there. think of it as a water cooler. where do you usually find the guys at work that dont feel like doing anything?
about 2 years ago i hunted right infront aof a creek and i saw the most deer out of that one stand that i have ever seen. they like to cross there more than anywhere else on the land. they have food and water there and about 100 yeards from it is a thick patch of pines. they loved it
im feeling pretty good about it i have cover all my shooting lanes clear i can shoot everywhere its perfect
looks good, bucks like to cross and run the creek bottoms in search of hot does this time of year. can never go wrong with a good stand setup near a creek! good luck...
On my land, I only hunt the creek. Found the main crossing onto my land and setup a stand. I need to set up another for a nothern wind. Just watch where your path to and from your stands are compared to the deer trails. In my area they even bed along the creek.
i shot this buck this year out of a stand set up at a creek crossing. i have two main crossings were the the banks allow them to cross easily and i have stands set up on both and have also killed deer out of both! when the bucks are out cruising for does they cruise trails that run along the creek as well. good luck! you should be seeing some action especially right now! http://forums.bowhunting.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4169&d=1289513314
well i went out this morning to the creek and was out for 4 hours but with a heavy fog i didnt see anything the whole hunt. the woods was dead
I would have left the honey suckle. Great, high nutritional browse for whitetails. We've actually grown it on certain properties we hunt because it holds a high protein yield and is palatable all year. Aside from that, I love hunting creeks and streams. Deer like to walk down the edge, and, finding a shallow crossing in a deep stream can be the ticket to filling a tag. Good luck !!
Creeks are usually pretty good and in my experience they are especially good in the early and late season
If you can just trim out some funnel lanes for the deer to walk thru & eat on their way to your shooting lanes.Good luck
My one chance this year at a shooter buck was hunting over the creek. He came down the ridge and skirted the creek. Never got a shot, he came as close as 8 yards by me. I was pissed to say the least that I couldnt get a shot. Late archery season opens back up in a few days. These past couple of days have been extremely hot, 70 degrees. Im ready for snow!
well good luck to you! yeah same hear its been in upper 60's and 50's all week and it rained for a solid two days now its below freezing and i got some water in the ccreek. gotta love ohio weather lol
i rarely hunt over creeks only if its a hot summer day and it calls for it but i hunt were there food sources are the acorns or put out some acorn rage and im set
