Last year I was able to have permission and hunt some of the neighbors land that borders my families property in Oklahoma. Well in the back of his property lies a bunch of old strip mines that are now overgrown and become a huge deer safe haven. Basically virgin territory since it is never hunted. Last year was my first year getting to hunt this type of terrain and was able to score a 5 point off of a trail.I have attached an aerial pic of a fresh strip mine to show you what I am talking about . If you have never seen this kind of terrain before, it is a bunch of ridges 30-50' high in rows and funnels for the deer to be traveling. Pretty neat if you were to ask me. My question is, does anyone else hunt this kind of terrain and do you have any tips for hunting it? http://
It surprises me that deer inhabit that type of terrain! Never seen anything like it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Granted the terrain looks like the picture but it's now overgrown with trees and dense brush. The trees are tall enough to use a climber. But the tall ridges that run throughout are still there. We figured out the bucks were chasing does all on the hills/ridges one morning and avoiding the field that was next to them. So we went in for a closer look and found scrapes, rubs, and trails beat down to just dirt from traveling it so much. In the bottom of the ridges they were also using these as funneling travel routes which are no longer than 40-50' wide. I guess they feel safe with the big ridges on both sides of their paths. If anyone ever finds one in the woods go investigate them. Very cool scenery.
