Justin, how do you like the Havalon? I have been really looking at these.

The havalon was the greatest thing ever invented for idiots like me who suck at sharpening knives. I bought the knife and a 100 pack of blades (yes, one hundred extra blades) for less than $55 last year on ebay brand new. To be honest, I may be set for longer than my lifetime. A blade stays sharp long enough to easily clean one deer, maybe more (although with the blades being so cheap I swap out after every animal).

Thing is light as hell, which is why I bought it. Needed a knife for the backcountry trips hauling everything in. My first trip to Alaska I had three different buck knives with me, which was a boneheaded move. This knife is all I'll ever need with a small cable type bone saw.

I use a simple Gerber Gator folding pocket knife for just about everything including boning out a deer. I use a larger kitchen knife for slicing steaks etc. But really, this little baby pretty much handles anything. I've even filleted walleyes with it. I own 2 of them. I have a whole drawer full of old buck knives from 30 and 40 years ago that never see meat.

That's what my husband uses. His was made in the U.S. I don't know if that's still true.

I use a Spyderco Delica 4, and I love it. I keep it sharp enough that I can shave my beard with it :tu:

I use the $15 walmart special. Been going great for years. No matter what, if I'm hunting, it's on my belt.

I ALWAYS keep a knife VERY accessable in the woods.

Since it is a skinning knife, it looks a little flimsy for field dressing purposes. With the havlon and a bone saw are you able to field dress complete with it?

Why do people feel a need to have a bone saw for messing with a deer? Absolutely no need for cutting bone. Even if you decide you have to open the chest cavity.... you can do it with a good sturdy knife.

I've been using a kershaw knife and skinner blade for about 5 years without complaints.

Because a good sturdy knife isn't needed for all applications (actually when it comes to cleaning deer, cutting through bone joints is the ONLY time that type of knife is needed). I much prefer a skinning type knife to cut through meat and skin the animal out.

    Plus a saw is faster.:moose:

All this said, My deer have been going to the processor lately. Makes me not despise the rush and madness following the big moment. Just get to enjoy it.
