Terrible regulations and deer management in NY
Getting better though
Looks like we'll be heading to NY in 2020 instead of OH. They priced us out. I'm pretty excited to hunt new areas I've never been. Thanks for all the info. We'll be in 8N where there is high probability of doe tags and several public areas. Not sure on the dates yet, but we'll be long gone by the time regular season opens. Found a campground that will still be open that can handle our needs.
This is the only pic I have on this phone of our tent. Three of us stay in it. 16x20. Just need power for the appliances.
Keep us posted, what town are you going to?
Staying in Bloomfield. Looks like the hunting is south of that a half hour or so.
There was a kid on here a few years ago from West Bloomfield and said the hunting was ag heavy but great.
Thats my area, what unit? Are you headed to Hi Tor?
Things you'll need GOOD boots tough terrain, good water /swamp boots. You never know the weather some years warm but I've had more than a few Oct 1 winter snow. So be prepared. 8N is a heavily hunted unit, heavy ag/ woods but lots of people and tons of hunting camps. You can jump on 390 S and be in line to many jump offs to near by public. So you can hunt your doe in 8N but buck in lots of less pressured close by units.
That's the plan. And over to Honeoye and harriet Hollister.
High pressure all October, would you say?
Well you have Canadice and Hemlock forests as well. If your coming out to scout in summer , check those out as well. Be prepared to see a lot of flagging at the road...guys tend to mark territory. Public is public. Just watch not straying to Reynolds Gull. Also seriously be diligent in your tag fill out here. They will nail you on the smallest error. Towns /counties and this is a 3 county hub with towns in strange county listings. Example: Son lives in Livingston county, address and kids school in Steuben county. Big bear area, though few taken. They do den tagging in winter around Monkey Run there.
Well you've heard me say everyone around here bow hunts as well as gun. That said the toughest would be the last 2 weeks of bow because that opens crossbow to all hunters that want to buy a muzzle loader tag. Week days are always best. This was a huge mast this season..So next season should be better hunting as far as not as many acorns. Spring frost will determine the wild apple and this area is loaded with wild apple.
Because of wind you'll find them bedding on the top 1/3 of a east /south slope or bottom of a west/ north one. Winds have changed over the years and we have been getting more south /south east winds early and W, N/W later. Winds really swirl up here I believe because of the lakes in the valleys. Oh don't over look the Conesus outlet. Though time the duck goose hunting with bow. Rattle snake hill isn't far as the crow flies also Sonyea state forest.
BTW there are a couple of camp grounds right in the middle of these lakes
Holiday hill and Tamarack
Yes. Thanks. Contacted them both already!!
If you have any questions or concerns let me know and I'll try to help. It will be a great trip, I'm sure!
Oh check site N.Y. antler outdoors, I think, has many great N.Y. bucks taken and where and time of month.
Very kind. Thanks.
Well, the Covid ruined our trip. The campsite cannot open their bath or shower house, and we dont have an RV. We are tenters. Unless that changes it's off. Bummed.
A big pan, a cook stove a portable shower bag ,length of rope and a limb. That or a sponge bath. Push comes to shove you all chip in for a mid week hotel room. You never know what will change before Oct.
Did that in our younger days. All set with that now.
