When shooting at live animals many of us bow hunters make the mistake of wanting to "look too quickly" at our shot which causes us to drop the bow hand and not have good follow through form. I know I've done this more than once resulting in misses. The good news is you had clean misses rather than a poor hit. The only answer is practice, practice, practice.
