Hey all, just went on a hunting trip with the bow this last weekend to stick some Russian boars with some friends. Had a great time and ended up with a few. A warning to all attempting Russian boar hunting with a bow, please take a sidearm with you. I know everyone wants to take an animal soley with the bow, but these boars tend to charge and attack you after you shoot them with an arrow. This actually happened to us and even though we would put a couple of arrows through the vitals, these boars are tough and they tend to charge. So, your options are to run like heck, climb a tree, or have to take them down with a pistol. You talk about a crazy, fun experience, I invite everyone to try at least once. I have attached some photos to check it out and the website for the ranch we went to. Thanks. http://www.svranch.com
That's crazy. I looked into a Russian hog in Michigan but never got up there. I assuming it was high fence? That makes the meaner. Had some hogs come in this weekend but no real shooters.
That is cool. I went with my son on a hog hunt a few years ago. His pig took three arrows and all right in the bread basket. It staggered for 15 to 20 minutes before it died. They are tough
Dang, if I ever get the chance I think im going to take a grizzly and boars with a gun. Don't know if I want to risk a bow.
Awesome work boys, I think they are similar if not the same to the pigs we have here in Oz. We can't carry pistols here unless we jump through all sorts of hoops and wait 12+ plus months for a licence etc etc. I've found it best to shoot them while they quarter away so you miss the 1-2" fighting pad they have covering the shoulder and vitals area. I also use at least a 125gn 2 blade fixed broadhead so there is no chance of failure. Having a big pig sticker on ya help helps as a back up if things turn ugly, a couple of the boys on the Oz bowhunting forum had a close encounter, he ended up laying on his back kicking a wounded boar in the head while his mate grab a broadhead and drove it into its chest with his bare hands. If i can find the thread and photos I'll add them. Crazy stuff. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Yes, the area was in a high fence, but I think it was a couple of a thousand acres, so not that easy. Walked many miles up and down hills trying to find them suckers. The broadheads that I used were the NAP - Hellrazors and my friend was using the NAP - Killzones. I preferred the fixed blades, because of that 1-2" fighting pad. It seemed like the mechanicals worked ok for my friend though.
Hey Afflicted, I couldn't find the forum post but it was in the the South Pacific Bowhunter mag we have here in Oz. I took a snap shot out of the mag that shows the guys with the pig after the incident. The photo is of Adam Greentree, Antonio Lara (who got barrelled by the pig) and Paul Wood. Basically, Antonio was in thick scrubby bush looking for the pig after shooting it. It came out of now where and knocked him over. He kept kicking it in the head with his size 13's but it managed to drive a tusk into his calf (don't have the photo of that one). Adam ran over to Antonio and stuck the pig in the chest with an arrow using his bare hands, then Paul grab it's back legs and turned it on it's back so Adam could drive another arrow into its chest to finish it off. Pretty scary I reckon, he's the photo.
Here are the two YouTube videos from the hunt: Part One (1): http://youtu.be/xPrtOP-mhAg Part Two (2): http://youtu.be/xJGLHKWn0EI
Pigs sure are alot of fun to hunt, so far I have only hunted feral hogs but I will probably pay to hunt russian boars some day.
That's wild MarkV. I can carry but never do. You got me thinking now I'm thinking of just packing a Machete to chop at the brush as well as a hog if they come at ya.
