I have an area on State Land that is hardwoods backed with a swamp, this swamp line continues for about 5-6 Miles. In the swamp at a certain point there is a little 1-1.5 acre island that sits between the hardwoods and a river. My question to you all is, Should I find a spot on this island and try and get them leaving the hard woods at night or should i find a spot along the hardwoods facing the island and catch them heading to the bedding area (island)? Here is the general area with the island in the middle, also this is a relatively high pressured area to hunt. Most of the other people will be north and south of me.
If they are bedding in the "island" I would stay out of it. I would setup in the closest "finger" of timber to the island and hope to catch them coming or going to bed depending on wind direction and time of day.
Another thought is the river....Can you setup in a tree with decent cover right off the river bank with the most deer sign? it is obviously the main water source fro the entire herd there.
I don't believe there are too many trees by the river as it is pretty swampy but there are some smaller islands adjacent to the one I am talking about. I haven't been too this Island yet because I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea 2 weeks before opener. I don't believe anyone really makes their way out to this island to hunt. I was thinking about sitting at the point closest to the island
