I have had a pro subscription to hunt stand for a few years now. Seems like every hunter i run into is using ONX My script to Hunt Stand runs out soon. Any info on what you find better is much appreciated !! Go:
I have used both extensively and I feel like both of them are really good. If I had to pick one I would use HuntStand, I like the ability to indicate hunt areas and select between them quickly and also to share and collaborate with other people based on a Hunt area and not all of my other info or a single waypoint. I also think HuntStand has access to a few more mapping options that are useful to me. With that said, I really believe both of them are great options and it’s probably a Chevy/Ford thing when people are providing strong opinions about one or the other. Most people are going to vote for what they are familiar with and not like the idea of something else that would force them to relearn how they use it. Just my opinion, others may vary.
Ive been on Hunstand for 6 yrs now(not the pro), tried Onx free trial, not impressed for just MY deer hunting ... for what I do and how I use it, the regular HS free is just fine .. was also on Scoutlook, then Hunstand took 'em over ... agree on not wanting to start over on OnX and relearn remark stand locations ( I have over 40 marked) ...
I use the free version of huntstand for wind direction, a few way points, moon phases and property lines. I also use Caltopo for my scouting as it has a good USGS map with 10' contour intervals. What I'm really looking for is a app that has contour lines smaller than 10' intervals. I've also been intrigued by Spartan Forge app, but skeptical.
Go Hunt is a great option. OnX is incredibly pricy for the service compared to others. Spartan Forge is another good one. I have less experience with Spartan Forge but like it a lot so far. OnX was first on the scene and I stuck with them, still have the elite membership… that being said they are getting left in the dust. I used hunt stand for a little bit when it first came out but quickly went back to OnX. Right now I would rate the 3 I use, Go Hunt maps, spartan forge, onX Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Interestingly enough in some of the areas I hunt, OnX doesn't have any property ownership data at all, but Huntstand does. That was a big plus for me.
I use OnX at the moment and its been fine. I will say the areal imagery isn't that up to date at times. Property lines are usually pretty good, but don't swear by their exact locations just by looking at the map. Overall i'm happy with OnX. I think all of them do one or two things a little better than the others so its a crap shoot. For my needs so far, OnX has been good.
Thanks for the input everyone. My script runs out in Nov. for Huntstand. I'll do the free demo from onx until then and see what works the best for me.
I think what you're going to find is there are some things you like better, and some things you don't. I've been through almost every hunting app ever created and always wished that they did something different or had some feature that the other ones have. I certainly don't envy the app makers trying to please all of us yahoos who want something different or use their apps in specific ways.
One thing I have found out using OnX, you better double check your property lines for the public pieces. And then recheck every piece you find that is public as to whether or not it can be hunted. I'm finding out I like when the property lines and hunting rules get convoluted. Keeps people away.
Good point VS! I've ran into issues on several apps that list properties as public, but they aren't actually open to hunting. I know in NE the school system owns a bunch of land that they lease out and it shows up as public on OnX. They've had a lot of issues with people showing up to hunt who have no idea they aren't allowed to be there. And in the process, pissing off the people who paid money to be there.
I have a pro account for both. I Find that I lean more on OnX for the tracking and waypoints/markers while I'm out in the field. Here in CA the DFW uses OnX as a resource for property boundaries. I've even been asked to show my tracking info to verify if I've tracked through private. Both apps have had wrong or outdated property information. Huntstand shows a wildlife preserve in my neighborhood and a deer hunt zone. OnX has it marked a wildlife preserve. I've posted map help about public vs private on this forum with images from both. The best resource was the rangers. Point is, both have flaws and some wrong information. It boils down to ease of use, features and Functionality. For me OnX gets 5 stars on function and features, 3 on ease of use. Huntstand gets about 3stars on all 3. I'll also add that OnX has better data, like tree types, water sources trails and access roads that can all be layered at once. If huntstand has those features I have yet to figure out how to have those layers active at the same time.
i have on x and its been good. however i checked it today and ive lost my private land boundries. plus keep getting hit to upgrade to premium. my subscription is up to date but the issued are starting to get me ticked . would like to talk to a person instead of the computer .
