Over the past few months I have seen several threads on several forums about how deer react to human urine. There are many nay sayers and many saying deer are not effected.

Tonight, I became a believer they do not mind it one bit. I got into my stand at around 2 this afternoon. Come 4 o'clock I can't hold it anymore. I figure what they hey and let loose. About 5:50pm a doe shows up and proceeds to walk to the base of my tree. She smells around where I climbed up from then begins to smell the brances my urine landed on. The next thing she did totally threw me for a loop, she started LICKING the branches.

I'm not sure if this was a rare phenomena or what, but it really caught me off guard. Has anyone else had similar encounters?

It's a farce. Human urine itself doesn't scare deer.

Found 2 big scrapes in Kentucky and as you know you can only hunt one at a time so I urinated in one of them. Every time I went by that scrape it was bigger. Guess where I moved my stand to.
Watched a big buck rub a good size tree and then took the time to lick it when he was done. When I got out of the stand , I walked over and licked it myself, he liked to rub the tree in half getting my scent off of it.

Now with all that being said, I hunt big, older deer and your not going to be catching me Free Pissing off of my stand and I try to keep from pissing all over my feet befor I enter the woods. LOL!

that sux!!! I had a squatter sitting in some old stands I had left up on my property and when I found him he said he didn't know it was private property... found out he got caught on my property again by my buddy who was out there. So guess what I did next to discourage the deer from going by "his" location... yuppers I pi$$ed everywhere, on trees, in bushes, on their trails, every where I could spread a drop. figured I didnt care cause we didnt use those stands anymore, and I figured it would push the deer closer to us... well guess not... hope he didn't kill anything out of that stand. I'm gonna start drinking lots of fluids and do some field research next year, too cold this time of year, plus I wont be home. lets just hope big boy doesn't come around with my pants down cause I guarantee I will drop my britches and grab my bow...

I'm 50/50 yet on this human pee thing. I've saw bucks explode away when they've smelt where I've peed and I've saw them do nothing where I've went.

I never tried It on a scrape and camera but I've always thought about doing It once. I saw It from my stand on 2 occasions. They might of smelled my foot tracks too but not sure as I was wearing rubbers.

I had never tried it before because I always thought any human scent was taboo. But I'm considering it this year since I'm tired of buying $10 dominant buck urine every couple of weeks, and some research tests seem to suggest it maybe even BETTER in some cases. I actually read about this in an article earlier this summer. Here's the text:

In the past hunters would hear a lot about mock scrapes. At one point, it seemed like everyone whitetail hunting on a TV show could teach how to make a mock scrape. However, it seems whitetail bucks are not as picky as we once thought. I know of one mock scrape study in particular where human urine as the only scent placed in some of the mock scrapes.

The researcher’s cameras recorded whitetail bucks using these mock scrapes and always left their own, real urine on the bare earth. This research showed that buck visits to mock scrapes with human urine were used at the same rate as those where buck urine had been used.

In another mock scrape study, the fake scrapes covered with human urine actually attracted more bucks than the mock scrapes baited with doe deer scent. And that does not surprise me because I don’t think deer know what human urine smells like. They also do not know the smell of the “other” buck, such as in a scrape switch, that visited their scrape. Any urine added to the scrape by any buck would smell different.

In short, there is no indication that human urine scares deer. So next time you head out whitetail hunting, take along a bottle or two of water because while your sitting there killing time you can be making your own buck attractant. Just don’t try to sell it.

Didn't read through all the responses, but I ABSOLUTELY believe that human urine does NOT scare deer -- in the LEAST.

I pee out of my stands all the time... the year I took my best buck (167 1/8), I had six different encounters with him before I was able to get an arrow in him. I peed out of all those stands, probably... as I usually do.

I laugh at people who carry cumbersome "pee bottles" to their stands... waste of time, and they're inviting a pretty yucky spill possibility to me. :)

Urine is sterile... it's the presence of the human scent from all your other body parts that will spook deer.

I am just not willing to risk that one time where a big boy decided he don't like it. took a leak during turkey season one year, little doe came through without a care in the world until she got right to the spot where I took a leak. She did not turn inside out, but she did get very nervous and ease on out.

I do not think it bothers them, but i am not willing to risk the one time it may.

Ok, from what I know, and this is with Black Bear. Guys you are not going to hide from them, I have been bear baiting for the better part of 30 years, My father would sit in the blind chain smoking, peeing ect and we would ten black bears running around.we set it up as we are a part of what's there. First of the year, we pee around the bait, put bug dope on the latter, even have bug coils burning. You can't win the smell battle, so I say make them use to you.

The deer probably smelled YOU, it wasn't likely the urine that spooked her. I've pee'd out of treestands for years....had an opportunity one night that just never materialized at one of the BIGGEST bucks I've seen in my life not 15minutes after re-fastening my belt.

There's a guy here in NE Ohio that has killed probably 10 deer over 160" that literally alters his diet to a vegan type diet and drinks a lot of apple juice, then stores his urine in a gallon bottle and uses it to put on scrapes every year. I'm not quite that dedicated, but that tells you something.

I don't think you even have to alter your diet... not for deer.

There's quite a popular thread on AT titled "French Roast urine in deer scrape" or something like that... guy monitored his scrapes for a few days after peeing in them after drinking loads of coffee... of course, I could have told him he'd still get great pics, if not even more.

Now ... when I'm trapping predators? Way different story.

But deer aren't predatory and don't mark their territories with feces and urine scent-posts like foxes and coyotes do. In THAT arena, I'm careful not to even use gray fox urine on a set that I'm specifically going for reds in, as they'll shy away from the aggressive species. In THAT world, it makes a difference.

    For whitetails? Pee away.

You are probably right, she could have smelled where I stood, etc...still not going to risk that one in a baziillion chance they get nervous and bolt.

Deer can and do have individual traits. I believe some deer act differently than others, and while I do pee off the stand when I absolutely have to, I'd rather not.
