Huh? Helical fletching is bad for hunting?

I had a guy tell me that he didn't recommend helical fletching for hunting, that it would cause a more erratic arrow flight. Does this make sense?

You've gotta be kidding me! That makes no sense at all. Sounds like you've been talking to the guy who own's my local archery shop.

I took my bow to a big archery shop in N.E. IL (GAT) one time and was shooting on the range. The head of the 'Pro' shop, took a look at my rest and declared that it was installed wrong. When he couldn't figure out how to adjust it to his liking with allen wrenches..... he got out a pair of pliers and bent it all to hell. I was too awestruck to do more than squeak "that can't possibly be right."
He declared it was and sent me home with my mangled rest.
This was a long time ago and it was the Huntmaster 2000 type rest (not sure if anyone here remembers those). In hindsight, I believe he was so used to seeing those rests on right handed bows that it looked backward to him on my left handed bow. But anyone with an ounce of sense should probably figure that out before bending metal with pliers!

Needless to say, I never took my bow back to that shop for anything, and I had to buy a new part for the rest...

So.... never just take anyone's word as gospel, no matter how much they think/act like they know.
Coming on here and asking is smart of you.

do not use it for hunting !!!

Helical makes the broadhead spin much, much faster, thus tears the meat up much more. DUMB SON OF A ***** lol

It doesn't matter as long as the broadhead is aligned with the fletchings.....

Yep. Makes sense considering the guy who owns the only shop I have available to me insists that my 510 grain arrows are WAY too heavy and that you shouldn't hunt deer with feather-fletched arrows.

I have to say this is the first thing I've heard him say that made me raise an eyebrow. He's really knowledgeable otherwise.

GAT Guns....silly people. I went there last Spring bound and determined to purchase a Hoyt Maxxis 35. Salesman continuously hounded me about the Mathews Z7 which I had shot, but liked the Maxxis better. I eventually walked out WITHOUT even shooting the Maxxis and purchased an Elite GT500 after shooting one at the shop I use now on the drive home. Never enjoyed being inside that place (GAT). Heard it closed down though.

My helical vanes must have some problem with them as my BHs really group much better than with straight vanes...:nana::rock:

Ok I would like to clear one thing up here for you.
Christine there can be no way that the tech that worked on your bow was Pete.
    1: he is a lefty
2: he would never ever take a pair of pliers to someones rest ruin it and then send them packing.
Unfortunately there were some guys there that thought they knew what they were doing and would screw up peoples bows.
But again I have a very hard time thinking that it was Pete.
I know that you did not say that it was Pete but he was refered to by others and I would hate to see him or his new shop get a bad wrap before he even has a chance to really get going over something I do not think he personally did.

Not Pete. It was Mike. (who I think went on to BP in Gurnee)

This was several years before Pete started working there.
