I know there are a few on here that are on the fence and there are some that are hunting full time with their Longbow or Recurve! Then there's the guys that have been doing it for years with out a doubt! I'm just curious as to how you guys are going about it this season, me, all of my bowhunting is done with my Longbow...100%!!!! How you going about it this season?
I normally hunt turkey, hogs, and fish this time of the year. Im in the middle of moving three different houses, so i dought ill be doing anything for a while. I still have to finish up a couple of bows (one being next years hunting bow), so I can tune them and get ready for next deer season.
The only time I'll use a compound is when I hunt on SWMNV properties. Only compounds and crossbows are allowed there. Anyplace else I hunt I'll be using one of my trad bows. BTW-I could still be deer hunting right now if it wasn't turkey season. Mission The mission of SWMNV is to: reduce and maintain the Whitetail deer population in Northern Virginia; restore a proper balance of wildlife within this geographical area; develop a general awareness of the wildlife management role of bowhunting in suburban settings; and promote a positive image of bowhunting and bowhunters.
I don't know yet. It will be some mix of the 2, but it will depend on how well I am shooting come fall & how difficult I think my hunting will be(read will I finally have some acorns this year) There is a day when I'd like to hunt 100% trad, but I am not in that place yet.
I really think it will be about 50/50 for me. I plan on going out on opening day with my compound, but I also see alot of early season doe hunting with the trad bow, I say doe hunting any hunting of either sex will do. I definately feel like I will be hunting the rut with the compound, no doubt, I really want to kill a big buck next season as I was skunked by the antlered suckers this year. If it hasnt happened before the rut I will be packing the compound. I just hope to get along early so I will be able to make alot of time for the trad bow. I guess we will se how things go.
That's a big one Jeff!! That's one of them that usually gets me most years. I've had a good amount of 4.5 year old bucks (130" to 150" ) 5 to 10 yards to far away (25 to 30 yard shots). I've never been one of those guys that says, just go for It and try It. I don't take risks on shots. Maybe I could've been successful on all of them or maybe I would of wounded them all. Who knows I guess but that's just how I hunt and don't see that ever changing. What's gotta change Is me setting my stands up better.
I'll make my decision on which bow I'll be using for deer season sometime around July/August and I'll stick with that one bow for everything. Right now I'm pretty much shooting only my longbow.
Bob, do you hunt with a compound, I thought you were a stick bow guy?? No offense my friend but just wondering! You coming to Wisconsin again this year??
Whatever you chose to shoot guys , i hope each of you fill your tags ( especially the first timers ) . I'm gonna practice ready for the following season ( 2010 ) and i'm hoping my first whitetail will be Trad gear only .
50/50 for me. Almost literally. First hunt longbow, 2nd hunt compound, 3rd hunt longbow, etc. That plan is certainly subject to change. I'll have a stand set up over my foodplot that will be close,(12-15yds.), that will be reserved for the longbow and will be my opening morning spot.
Offense, na it'll more then that. :d You're correct I do not shoot compound, I did pick one up to shoot about four years ago and it felt very foreign in my hands. Didn't like it at all. Wisconsin, I'd sure love to. Things are a little tight right now though. But, we'll see.
