Last night I had an encounter with the one buck I know is in my area. 2 different neighbors have seen him recently, this is my first time seeing him since last season. He was in the ditch as we drove by, caught him leaping over a fence in the headlights. I am pretty sure my property is part of his travel route to a cut bean field where I know he has been spotted twice. I put a trailcam there thurs morming, and plan to check it Sunday. Sunday evening is the only time I will be able to hunt this weekend, but it's not going to be cold. My question is this: how should I go about hunting him? Any time I can or is it even worth hunting if there is no cold front or anything? If how often can I pull the cam card without overpressuring him? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If he is traveling to a bean field and going through your property you need to be in the tree in the late afternoon until dark. Deer eat every day, not just when it is cold. Get in the tree on his travel corridor. If possible you might think about being on the trail a hundred yards or more back in the woods. He will likely come in later than the other deer so waiting for him on the field edge may not work. Can't kill him on the couch :D. As far as checking your cameras goes it depends on whether or not you can drive up to them or have to walk in through the woods. Generally I don't check cameras regularly but I can't drive to any of them. Good luck!
The buck is having to cross a road to get into the beans from my property. Thought I'd add that. You are right, he is not an early riser at all. But after I pull the card I will be able to see if he is getting to my stand before dark or not. If he's arriving after dark, it will complicate things a bit. I could try to set up further towards his bedding area, but I am not sure where he is bedding. He has been sighted one evening last eek one evening in a marsh that is nature preserve land, so he may be bedding there, about 150 yards from the food. However, my property has lots of junipers and cedar and redpine. Last year about this time of year I spotted him bedded in that area of my property. So if I try to move closer to him, I risk getting within earshot of his bed. Sent from my KFTT using Tapatalk
This is always a tricky situation to pull the card or avoid the area I personally would stay out of there the best chance of killing him is on one of the first times in a stand. That being said though is there any natural feed like oaks anywhere on his route because if there is he is going to stage up there then work his way to the beans. I also feel that sometimes a big buck can get cam scared I have watch many bucks go another way away from a trail cam it's not natural
