I need to know- does switching to the thumb release necessitate a draw length increase?

It can, depends on the neck length and if you keep the same anchor point.

With my wrist strap / index, I used to anchor back of my jaw. When I went to a thumb, I use my index/mid knuckles further forward on my jaw. Because I changed anchor my length didn't change, but my peep did (as my anchor is lower).
