Thats right and you don't need a ship to do it. It doesn't even have to be a port city. They could go Greyhound! So whats next? Make sure NO ONE can buy a .50? Or how about ANY weapon? They used box cutters on those planes, should we keep box cutters off merchant vessels so no one hijacks a ship and crashes it into the bay bridge? Anyone can come up with a worst case scenario, hence my statement about the sky falling.

Not a worst case scenario. Just a regular scenario. Worst case would be a nuclear bomb on the ship or in the planes that crashed. The 50 cals would be on the ship legally, big difference.

Why not get rid of airport security and arm every passenger(maybe with a box cutter) on the plane? I bet the terrorists would think twice about hijacking one then.

But that's eXACTLY what's happening with the pirates... different venue, same principle. There's no security (airport security) so the terrorists don't think twice about hijacking them.

Then let's authorize the Navy to patrol the waters and use deadly force(like airport security ;) ). These pirates are terrorists and we are currently in a "war on terror", right?

I'm not opposed to that either, Bruce... problem is, I don't think they can be everywhere at once.

Airport security personnel have to go through background checks and training. Why not do the same with select members of a ships crew?

Didn't read the whole thread but the biggest hold back in these company's arming their ships is insurance, like liability insurance. They don't won't that responsibility, that and the fact of Maritime laws.

I understand that. A story I heard on the radio explained that ransom is considered a legitimate cost of doing business to many oceanic shipping companies. I just can't for the life of me understand that passive approach.

You have to be 23 to get a conceal and carry license.

Hell, they have RANSOM INSURANCE!!!! :ninja: You get hijacked, we'll pay the ransom!!!! I cannot imagine the thought of paying for insurance in case I get hijacked!!! That is absolutely ludicrous!!!! No reason why this type of stuff should be going on except that no one has put forth a strong effort at stopping it!!! How much is ransom insurance??? I'd bet you could hire a security force for just as cheap, maybe cheaper, and not have to worry about such foolishness at all. :uzi:

Another US ship was attacked last night and damaged with rocket fire but evaded the pirates.
