I have always put the meat in saran wrap then freezer paper. never really had any problems, but it can be time consuming to wrap. cabelas has a foodsaver on sale, so i was wondering if those are worth it or not? do they work wonders? go pretty quickly? pros, and cons?
I used to use a food saver but now use a different brand, vacuumpacker (more expensive but much better in many ways). Anyway, the food saver, or vauum sealing in general, helps things go a little more quickly. I don't know that they work wonders but you can use them for way more than just sealing venison. Pros - takes food preservation to another level Cons - There is a bit of a learning curve to get things done the way you want but then there are no cons. One thing to keep in mind about the "smaller" (less expensive) food saver models: You have to let the sealer cool down, or seal packages more slowly, between each vacuum/seal cycle as they are not made for continuous use.
I bought a food saver several years ago. I think they're fantastic. Don't skimp trying to save a few bucks... buy a good one. I slice all my steaks, lay them in a single layer and freeze them in packages for two. If I need more I just thaw extra. The single layer allows for fast thawing and nice stacking in the freezer. I use mine for a lot of stuff. Brought back 80 pounds of sockeye from Alaska a couple years ago. Vaccum packed while there and froze them. They were still frozen 38 hours after I left Alaska when I got home Great for walleye fillets and all sorts of things. I've heard some of the newer models have some short comings.....but the better ones are fine. Go cheap and you'll probably get burned. I even made beef stock and vegetable stock from scratch(all day process with baking the bones and all), then I froze them in little containers. When they were frozen I dumped them into vacuum pack bags in half cup increments. If I need some sure enough delicious beef stock I just cut off what I need and thaw them.
well im not going to spend a whole lot on it, but i figure if i stick with a name brand it will work good enough, the one that is on sale at cabelas is the food saver, v2244 if anyone has any info about it that would be great, if not ill rely on the internet reviews I am the type to buy in bulk and freeze, or make my own recipes in bulk then freeze, so i think it will be of great use to me. thanks for the replies guys, if anyone else has any comments please chime in,
