Little background on the story. I live way out in the country with just a few neighbors, the closest is about 200 yards away. We all are friendly with one another, yet respect each others privacy and don't sweat the small stuff like kids riding bikes across yards, shooting guns, etc. Life is pretty peaceful out here. However, my closest neighbor is starting to tick me off.

She got a new dog in September. Nice enough dog, german sheppard, its scared of its own shadow. Here's the rub, though. She has an invisible dog fence in the yard, with the collar that is supposed to keep the dog in her yard. She turns the collar off when she goes to work at night, and the dog comes in my yard and digs holes, barks at my dog (which is in a pen at night) and craps everywhere. I've gone so far as to walk the dog back to her yard and put him on the chain in the yard. Neighbor came home, took him off the chain, and the scenario continued.

I've left voicemails with said neighbor, all polite, asking her to keep the dog in her yard. No answer. We don't have a dog catcher in our county, so thats not an option. I'm running out of ideas here and trying to keep the peace. Last night was the final straw, the dog barked outside my window from 3am-5am....non stop. Any ideas?

Tell her that you are having a bad time with 'possums, raccoons, etc, and that you are going to be setting some traps on your property and you dont want her dog to get hurt or killed. It worked for me when I had a neighbor letting her two dogs run the countryside at one of my farms.

If that doesnt work, put a sign in your yard that says, "German Shepherd, FREE to good home". That will work.

I know you are joking, but I'm not going to shoot the dog.

You have to make sure its a gay male dog before killing it. If its a female , tell her you are gonna make a sex tape and sell it to the highest bidder.

This seems to be not the way to do it.

An Iowa woman hanged one of her boyfriend's three dogs in the garage, and told police that she killed the dog because it was old and sick.

The Des Moines Register reports 28-year-old Sheena Cornwell was arrested Saturday evening after her boyfriend came home to discover the dog hanging by its collar and leash from the rafter in the garage

Take off its collar and drop it off at an animal shelter

Get a bigger, meaner dog...and let the natural way of things sort it out...

Mechanic that worked for my grandfather always had the dangedest time with a dog that was constantly chasing the cars on the road and biting at the tires causing the drivers to all but stop to avoid running over the dog. The owner would have no part of restraining the dog.

He fixed it by tying a rag onto the wheel of the car.

If it were my yard, I'd go the trap warning route. If she still doesn't restrain the dog, actually set some traps.

First time or two that dog gets caught it will learn to avoid those areas.

Catch the dog, call the sheriff, have them take it in to the pound. The neighbor will get a ticket and have to pay to get the dog back.

Stop being polite with the messages to the neighbor. Be firm and clear that the dog is creating a problem that will not be tolerated.

No dog catcher or pound. Its a piss poor county made up mostly of small farming towns. If I called the sheriff, he'd come over and shoot it. Thats what I'm trying to avoid.

Have you actually verified this with the sheriff's police?

Most Illinois counties don't have 'dog catchers' but they still have lock-ups for dogs-at-large.

You couldn't tell the Sheriff to just talk to the neighbor? And you might mention something like "don't shoot the dog"

The sheriff and I are old friends. I know exactly what he would do, because thats what he told me to do.... to save him the trip.
