I've been getting a lot of pictures of this guy this year, and I just can't make my mind up if he is 2.5 or 3.5. After watching the last bhod episode, I'm leaning toward 3.5. What do you think?[IMG]

No more than 3 1/2 but the best way to tell is shoot him and send in the teeth. ;)

He's too young. I'd guess him at 3.5 but yeah he could be just 2.5.

Thanks for the insight guys. I'm new to the aging game. Glad to see I was in the ballpark.

I think that would be up to the person who is hunting the deer.

If you like him and get the chance, take him if you want. True that allowing a deer to hit 4.5 years old gives it great potential for expressing antler growth but don't let what others choose to influence what you choose to shoot.

It is indeed. If I'm hunting him he's too young. He asked for input and he got mine. I'm sure he knows that he is welcome to shoot the deer given that he is the one hunting there. Let's don't act like I climbed on a soapbox about passing young deer. The reason that I added "he's too young" is because it is not obvious whether he is 2 or 3 and the point is that the deer is at least a year away from making that jump that the OP is likely to be thinking about. Right or wrong I read that much into his question.

Hey fellas let's not argue about the point. It's pretty basic..I'm the OP and I do.understand that each person can decide whether or not to shoot this deer, and I understand the point that it may be too young for some. The point of the post was that I am trying to let the deer on the property get a little older, but I've never really aged deer in the past. I was trying to calibrate my eyes a little. I appreciate everyone's input. We don't need to bicker like on most internet forums. Bowhunting.com guys are better than that haha.

Two nice young deer for sure. If you're wanting to grow big deer like you say those would be a couple good ones to pass. I bet they will be nice next year and REAL nice in 2.

Passing them is the plan, I have pictures of a couple older looking deer as well, just not as "easy" to pattern. Haha imagine that haha

Yea no fuss from me. I sensed that you had already decided to pass the deer so I'm backing you up buddy. I certainly understand that some other guys would love to shoot bucks like that. It's all relative to what you've got and what you want.

Yep. I'm one of the guys that believes the trophy is in the eye of the hunter..I'm also just a guy lucky enough to have access to a piece of land that holds multiple bucks in each age level.

he's no older than 3.5 but a shooter to some for sure depending the situation and external factors. could be a trophy to some depending on their out look. if you're looking for overall growth potential than I would let him keep walking and producing his genes on the land, and too keep searching for that 4 or older buck.
best of luck in your pursuit dude!

I don't consider age when deciding to shoot or not. If the buck is bigger than any buck I have shot I shoot. I don't do any kind or score estimation. When I see a buck coming and his antlers make me think Woo I shoot, otherwise I just sit down and watch.
