I have a property that is open range with lots of oil but it's a long way from any roads. The deer see vehicles on a daily basis and I've placed two cameras on a couple of my favorite trails with mineral blocks for the "pause for picture" affect. How often should I check these?
For me it depends on the property. My honey hole property is in an area that the deer have become acustom to seeing and interacting with humans on a daily basis. Wether its the airport, housing development, maximum security prison, the county jail construction site, or the farm that surrounds the woods, it has caused the deer to worry less about humans. I will check cameras in that area every other day. On the other farms I hunt the cameras get checked every Saturday.
Two of mine I check weekly, mostly because I don't hunt that area....unless I see something that will tempt me. Two others I've had out for 3 weeks and haven't checked them yet....I'll probably check them in the next few days. Two others are still sitting in the box.....
To often! I would like to go every 2 weeks but my curiosity gets the best of me and it usually ends up being about a week to week and a half.
Usually once a week depending on the camera. Certain spots are just a pain to get to and thats the ones i leave out for a while. Places i can practically drive up to without disturbing anything I will check whenever i feel like it!
Its all about the property. I agree Buck Magnet, if the property gets alot of regular traffic you can get away with alot more. If it is swamp that deer dont get regular pressure, only go in when you have to.
once every 4 weeks this summer, mine are all set in places a buck would not expect much human intrusion nor tolerate much of it...
Troy - when you do check your cameras are you taking any sort of scent control measures? I know a lot of guys that are showering, using rubber boots, gloves, and even scent-lok clothing while checking cameras and then are spraying the cameras down with scent killer before they leave. Seems like a good idea to me, and I've been wanting to do it, but for some reason I can't seem to get myself in that mindset quite yet.
Good question, Justin. I'm definitely wearing rubber boots and spraying the camera down with scent killer before leaving... Maybe not as much as I should be doing, but I figure it should be enough this time of year.
Mechdoc and I have taken a different approach. We spray down in bug spray, wear no gloves and walk into the woods to check the camera. We have had a few deer come up and sniff the camera. We still have heavy deer activity and we are getting pictures. My hope is that the deer will be used to our scent and bug spray so we can hunt and not be detected or spook the deer. So far we had a buck within an hour of us checking pics show up and hang out in front of the camera when we left. This might be opposite of common logic but it is working out and the deer dig us
I only put 1 camera out this year in June and checked it twice. Now I have pulled it until the season gets rolling. I have to becareful with pressure on the small piece of private I hunt.
I haven't checked my WV camera's since August 3rd of last year!!! Guess I should really get out there to get those!
