My truck is a 02' F-150 with 100,000 miles on it. Runs great. The thing about it is that we probably only put 500 miles per month on it max. That is only 1500 miles per three months which is the gold standard of oil change intervals. I used to be religious about every three months or 3000 miles but have relaxed on that due to many studies being done showing that the standard interval is just wasting money by changing your oil more often than necessary. Most car manufactures are following suit and increasing their recommended oil change interval. I usually go about 5-6 months now (which is still way less than 3000 miles typically) before changing it on the truck and just check my oil to make sure it isn't getting too black and broke down. We probably only drive the truck 3 days a week so it isn't going through a lot of heat cycles. Our 2004 Honda Accord is our higher mileage vehicle putting on 1500 miles per month. I usually change it at 4000-5000 miles. Curious what others do.
I change my truck oil about every 3 months, which is about every 3000-4,000 miles. I do the stop and go thing where I live, so I change it pretty frequently. The proof is in the pudding as most every time I change the oil it has already started turning black.
depends out here in az i change every 3 months no matter how much i drive. take care of your truck and it will take care of you.
My truck has burned oil ever since it was new. They told me this was normal. So somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 miles the oil light comes on and it reminds to change the oil (and yes, I add some). I did manage to go 135,000 or so before changing my brake pads and rotors. The truck still kind of stopped but it was harder to convice it to do so... 'specially with the pontoon boat behind it.
5,000 miles + or - a few, I use Mobile 1 exclusively. When I was running a turbo motor I would change it a lot more frequently.
I also use Mobil 1 exclusively... In my S-10 I used Mobil 1 Extended performance 15,000 miles. I changed it every 10,000 and it still had the viscosity (feel) as it did when I poured it in. Now with my newer Dakota I don't know what the previous owner used but I will be running regular Mobil1 5w-30 Full synthetic and change it every 5,000 miles. My wife's Ranier I also use Regular Mobil 1 and reset the built in Oil Change timer when I do so, I'm not sure what the mileage is on it. I need to check that, the built in timer is very convenient. My mail Jeep I used to use Castrol Syntec blend but they stopped carrying it and I switched to Valvoline Synthetic blend and will change it about every 3,000 miles.... those are HARD miles.
It all depends really on the type of oil your using. Some of the oils out there break down much sooner then others. The oil filters too can have an effect. My milk truck oil gets changed every 10,000 miles while my vehicles get changed every 3,000 miles. Using a very high quality oil and filter, you can go farther on the oil changes.
I just use regular conventional oil since my dad gets it in 50 gallon shipments. Mostly highway miles, but I change every 3K religiously.
Truck #1 - '99 cherokee, 109000 miles, I change it every 3000 miles, which is usually about every 6 to 8 months, since I only put about 5000 miles a year on it. Car #2 - '04 Honda Accord, 114,000 miles, every 3000 to 4000 miles, which is usually about 2 to 3 months, I use this car for my work, I'm a salesman, lots of miles on that !
I usually go about 5K miles and I have it changed. I don't do it myself because of the mess and having to get rid of the waste oil. Easier to just go to a drive through oil place like Speedy Lube. I don't keep a vehicle much longer than 3-4 years ( 65K miles ) so I don't bother with synthetics.
I just wait for it to start knocking. Seriously, probably every 5-6K in the Durango. I change it myself and use Valvoline. The wife gets the explorers oil changed at speed lube every 3k.
150,000 miles and counting on my Ford Focus, every 5K for that car. My truck every 3 months weather it needs it or not. I only put about 1000 miles on it.
I change my personal vehicles every 3-4,000... sometimes I'll not be as "on the ball" and they may get closer to 5,000 but that's more the exception. Seems to have worked pretty well as my Jeep Grand Cherokee has 245,000 on it and my Lexus has 253,000 and both are running like brand new. My company vehicle, on the other hand, is getting changed every 7,000 miles -- and that's with regular old oil. Surprised me too when I saw the maintenance schedule they had set up for them, but that's what they want. If it was a vehicle I was going to buy when it came off lease, I'd change it once between the scheduled changes myself out of my own pocket but it's not so it gets changed every 7,000 like they want.
In my truck, I was pretty religious every 5K for the 1st 75K miles. Then I started slacking & would add some kind of oil treatment @ 5K then change at the next 5K. That got me thru to about 120K. After that I started only driving it on occasion. It now has 130K and the engine is about the best thing on the truck. I got it changed last summer, but I probably put less than 1000 miles on it since then. My car I get changed every 5K or so.
