    My arrow weighs 500gr.

    My gpp (math-whiz, here) is +/- 9.62.

I have various set-ups between 265-290, 290 is plenty for me. The 82nd I had spit out 313 w/ a 385gr arrow at about 29.5" w/ a loaded string and pulling about 68#, that was SMOKIN' fast, but I was also underspined even with my .340 arrow and a 100gr tip, so it was a little WILD at the same time. I punched an arrow through the spine of a 150# deer from about 40yds in '08 and an it passed cleanly through the spine and into the lungs sticking into the ground (the deer was laying down facing away from me). That arrow was travelling about 270-272fps from the bow according to a chrono, so it was likely down in the 250's when it hit. It also weighed about 450gr though, which I'm sure aided in penetrating completely through the spine as it did from that distance. On the same token, I put a 420gr arrow through the spine of a 250# buck from 14 yds, almost directly above him, and that arrow likewise stick into the ground, and that was a 265fps chrono'd bow. Both BH WERE fixed blade as well.

I try and keep my speed between 240 and 250 FPS. I find I shoot a more consistent arrow.

When I decide to build a new arrow I do not even consider speed. I want a weight range and a FOC range then, I build the arrow and adjust the DW of the bow for optimal tune and arrow flight. Finally, I measure the speed and, it is what it is.

I do the same Bruce...except since I don't own a chrono (and probably never will), it indeed is what it is... LOL.

I don't care a flip about what it's shooting as long as I'm happy with its performance.

What kind of bow are you using on this? Is this your recurve set up I hope but really can't imagine it getting those speeds. What bow is this? Maybe I've been away from the new recurves too long. My old Damon Howitt recurve was lucky if it hit 150. LOL Although I never tested it. I do have a Kota I play with but have never speed tested it or anything. 180 is pretty damn fast for a 52 pound draw with that weight. They must be making them better. That's pretty slick for a recurve IMO.

That was my "old" Schafer Silvertip. My new bow (same bowyer/same specs) should perform similarly. It's really not all that fast (if that's what you're implying). I've seen faster with similar arrows/different bowyer.

    OK

    My bowyer thanks you.

Then there is something terribly wrong with that howitt. Even 1960's colt and bears I have shot beats 170fps with 10ggp. Even my selfbows made out of osage gets 155fps with 10gpp. This is of course with 29.5" draw.

I said I never tested it. Hell, when I started they didn't have cronies sitting all over the neighborhood. PLUS, your arms are a few feet longer than mine. There was nothing wrong with the Damon. I was killing deer with it before you were born sunshine.

Well, sunshine why did you open your trap about chronys and speed if you are totally ignorant in the matter about your bow??? Goodness, I think some folks just post to be posting.

You sit here and say they must be making them better and yada yada, when you have no clue what yours is even shooting.

Ask BC... he's the resident expert on anything. Ask him... he'll tell you. Except little fish. He doesn't like them. Don't mention fish.

The speed of sound is 768mph or 1,125ish fps so until you get past the point of deer being able to hear the bow before the arrow gets there... it doesn't matter IMO. My recurve was chrono'ed on Sunday at 150fps and I know it will kill deer. :D

I like to see the flight of the arrow. It's the only way you can become the arrow. No way do I need or desire to be flying at 300 fps. 300 is enough if that's the lowest selection we get. I'm about 255 with a 475.

    1250 ftps
you wouldn't even see you arrow in flite.
think the vains would peel off, and the arrow would mushroom on impack.
    that would be so cool.
may as well just use the gun.
    because with peed comes distance,

I shoot both aluminum and carbon because I like to experiment. My arrow speeds run from 243 fps with my aluminum (497gr arrow) to 281fps with my 363 gr cabons. Having a heavier arrow is far more important to me then a set-up that runs 300fps. I have never shot a deer over 22 yards and probably never will in my neck of the woods. I like to shoot at the very least 6gr of arrow weight per pound of draw weight. It keeps things quiet and is easier on the bow. My draw weight peaks at 59# and I have no pass through issues. Archery is a SKILLS sport not a SPEED RACE. No matter what keep this in mind... A noisey fast bow does not travel faster then the speed of sound. At my last 3D shoot I had 3 comments from people on how quiet my PSE X-FORCE GX was. Not one person asked me how fast I was shooting. A quiet set-up with a medium to heavy arrow is the cats MEOW!
