I have heard from guys that coyote hunt that most times you get a few bucks......sometimes they say they cant give them away. at times they said prices are up but not often
Last I heard they're still animals. I'm talking about the saying that people throw out around here all the time, "You should respect any animal you kill." You will find that saying, basically word for word on any thread for a lost deer. I just find it funny that its ok to shoot a coyote, and leave it lay, but it wasn't ok to shoot that chipmunk and leave it lay, like the one guy posted earlier in the season. Seems hypocritical to me.
We're talking about coyotes though. Not squirrels, chickens, osprey or oompa loomps. I don't shoot any animal I see, only those that I have a valid permit for or ones that need population controlled. I don't even shoot squirrels from stand, they're in season and I could legally do so, but I'm there to hunt deer. I've had a red fox, rabbit, raccoons, opossums, mink and even a bobcat(protected under IL law) that I could have shot. I didn't and don't really plan to. When you ant leave a deer to lay for more than an hour it makes it difficult to even deer hunt at times. If the coyote population was not so high in a lot of areas in IL I probably wouldn't shoot one of them either. But fact of the matter is they are overpopulated, overpopulation equals supply and therefore no real demand, no demand equals no money for pelts. Both coyotes I have shot fell within sight. One fell in a runoff ditch and the other below dropped in its tracks. I snapped a few pictures of it and tossed it over the edge of a ditch. I know where both layed, if I go back and find the skulls for trophy displays will I have redeemed myself?
The chipmunk was still alive when the shooter started taking pics of it. That is what most peoples gripe was, not the fact that he shot a chipmunk. He reportedly quartered it out, tanned the hide and donated its organs to science, so everyone was happy. I've shot a few yotes over the years. They stink, bad. No way am I ruining a pair of gloves to drag that thing to the vehicle, then drive it home, and ultimately, throw it in some brush behind my house. Not happening. I shoot it, get my arrow, get a pic if I see it go down and go on about my business. It's a varmint, nothing more, nothing less.
Groney's fur buying routes. I used to sell to him back in the day. He'll buy whole critters, skinned but not put up or stretched and dried. Yotes will go bad pretty quickly (green belly) if you don't skin 'em out... so I recommend at least skinning them and then freezing the pelt. (thaw it out mostly before selling it) Illinois 'yotes are pretty crummy for the most part. They're not like western silky 'yotes that can bring $50 or more. (and just to keep poking ya'll with that stick, did I mention the $50 bounty on 'yotes out here. :D ) Fur Route Schedules | GFW ? Groenewold Fur & Wool Co.
Can't kill enough of them. Don't care what happens to them either. If they have any value for the fur... go for it if you want. All I care about them is that they are gone and all I want back from one is my arrow. Good riddance!
I would look for it because I have never killed a coyote. If I had difficulty finding it say at night, I would call it off until the next day. After a day or so, I would not look anymore.
I don't get what everyone's crying about. How is tracking the coyote and "taking it out of the woods" not wasteful? To me that's more wasteful. In my area they totally need control. I have farmers who even pay me per dog. On their properties I will get them and take them to my place. And I have a spot in the woods I will throw them. When I'm on my property ill just shoot and not even get up. For those of you gonna give me the its the same as a deer crap. It's not! Coyotes need control but I don't eat them. And my wife is not really fond of coyote fur socks or pants. She prefers cotton sewed in a Chinese factory by a 6 yesr old. So for me to take it out of the woods, what have I accomplished? Skin it? Then what??? Or how about I just let it lie and let raccoons, ravens, hawks, vultures, mice, flies etc etc etc do what they are supposed to do. At least they will eat it and all of it. So it does not go to waste. You taking it home, skinning it, then putting the carcas in a garbage bag and on the sidewalk is not respecting the animal or nature at all. Or your local garbage man.
My wife's sentiments exactly. I told her about this... she agreed for me not to bring them home. We have enough problems with fleas, and ticks from the critters we want around the house... like our 16 year old son's friends. LOL
I think, and I could be wrong, that the thread is getting derailed a bit. I think we can all agree it is good to thin their population, that they can be harmful to pets, farm animals etc. Personally all I would ask is a person follow up with their shot. If you for some reason place a bad shop and it is injured finish the job.
I don't think anyone is really arguing that point either, I'll track it and make sure it's dead. I'm just not going to recover and use it for anything other than a full body mount and that would only be certain circumstances. That being said, if I didn't have an ideal shot and its a long track, I won't be backing out and returning a few hours later or the next morning. But I will still try to make a quick and ethical kill when possible.
Not much chance your going to get a followup shot on a wounded coyote. If you didn't get a kill shot with the first shot, they'll be in the next county by time you get down out of the tree. Like I said, I respect them for the killers they are. They will eat their prey while it's still alive, so I personally don't feel the need to treat them humanly because they are a savage creature. I believe it was on here, but someone posted a series of trail cam pictures, over the course of several hours that showed coyotes taking down and devouring a fully mature buck. He was alive for the majority of it as they ripped him apart. So, If I stick one and he runs off, well that's just better for me. I don't have to drag his mangy but out of my hunting area.
Yep, we make puppets out of them and put on shows at the old folks home. I think chipmunks are cute and fluffy as well! If you can get more than 3 they can fill your belly too.
I've got a taxidermist here that will take them whole. Just shoot it, throw it in a garbage and freeze it til I can get them to him. When I get time I run them up. If I can get a few to him then he'll give me a discount on a shoulder mount for a buck. He tans the hides and sells them. So it's basically free money for him and a small discount on taxi work for me.
As do I. I don't blame Jacob though on how he feels. When **** messes with your livelihood things change and understandably so.
